I went with the padded VTAC sling for my bolt gun, it doesn't seem to be set up for a bolt gun, I dont need to be able to have the rifle sit in front of me, I just need to sling it on my back occassionally. What's the best bet? TAB?

If all you need is a carry strap - pop into Brownells and search on sling. they used to do their own leather strap as I recall?
I can see why it wouldn't work as intended for other applications with that configuration, but if your rifle has swivels under the forearm and butt ...why does the VTAC not work as a simple carry strap?
As sniperCJ says....the TAB/TIS is more sling than you'd need for a carry strap.
Loads of webbing alternatives around.....

TAB or TIS sling would work for that, and you can use it for a sling supported position shooting too. But, if you're just looking for something to sling across your back, a classic leather sling works fine and you can get padded models with plain to fancy tooling.

Are you sure you want to do that in the first place?
Consider the role of the slings in these applications. I tend to think the VTAC was designed with carbines in mind. Its good for rapid tension adjustments to facilitate transitions from strong to weak side shooting, slung up to shooting stance, etc. Its kinda designed with a dynamic environment in mind.
On a bolt gun the sling is really more a utility design to carry it. I tried mine on my bolt gun and didn't like it. Wasn't thick enough to carry the heavier rifle comfortably and I couldn't find a reason to mess with the tension/length adjustment at all.
That VTAC is a great sling on a carbine, not so sure its worth it on a bolt gun. I have a TAB sling and like it very much. I like the cuff option for support when shooting and I like that its wide and supports the weight of the rifle well. Its also very adjustable, but meant to be dialed in and left alone, not adjusted on the fly as with the VTAC.

kmc9029 if the selection of slings on the website is not what you want, and all you're wanting is a simple carry strap, we can accommodate you with no problem. Just let us know what you're wanting and we can get you squared away.
You guys may be interested to know that we've introduced our new sling at SHOT over the last few days. We'll have pictures up soon. Basically the sling retains the same forward section that has the shooting loop that allows you to sling up for positional shooting but is constructed to allow the sling to be quickly tightened up to the body.
Recently, like less than three weeks ago, I received the tension adjustment that is now being made in the 1 1/2" version. We had a group of military shooters do some evaluations with two different versions of the sling. The consensus was that half of the guys liked it one way and half of them liked it the other way. So it looks like we'll be coming out with two new slings that allow the precision rifle to have a quick adjust feature while still allowing the rifle to retain the positional capabilities we are currently known for.
More information will be coming shortly, but both of the prototypes were extremely well received by everyone at SHOT.

I never even thought about that until SHOT when about a dozen people asked that very question. I'll look at the two slings and figure out what would be the best way to accommodate anyone who would like to do that.
We've got to change a couple things on the sling based on some suggestions that will make it a better unit, but hope to have some pictures up soon and start taking orders shortly after that.
