So I have a 14.5 pinned to 16 lightweight 308. By @50rod (aka weber customs) been contemplating and a little price shy of a nightforce 3-15 just got offered a vx-5hd 3-15x56 firedot scope in trade that I could put on my lightweight 308. 21.9 ounces is pleasantly at the bottom range of the scopes I was considering. 56mm is the larger end as well.

Conceptually seems like a good idea. I'm not going to win a 600m competition. But as I"d have only $800 into this personally its very attractive. Already have some nightforce 30mm rings on the gun easy startup and if I really like the gun maybe I'll be willing to spend more on glass and upgrade next year when I'm not trying to buy another building for work.

Pinned FH or brake? Probably doesn't matter anyway. It sounds like you could sell the scope with no or minimal loss if doesn't work out, so why not give it a try? Guessing that FOV and low light performance at 3x should be pretty good.

That moment when I don't know if your being sarcastic or not.. are you saying the light performance at 15 will be crap? Or just that higher mag in at night is never great.

ASR brake going to end up suppressing it next year if this goes well. Flashcan this year

No, not sarcastic. Being that your .308 is short and light, I assume you place a higher value on shorter ranges and even close-quarters performance where lower magnification, wide FOV and good light gathering performance will be to your benefit.

Thanks for the clarification tone is hard to read in text. I got confused when you said light gathering at 3x not at 15x.
