Wanting Advice On My First Build

I am just starting to get serious on a long range build. Im starting with a Winchester Model 70 chambered in .300 Win Mag with a Simmons 3x9x50 optic. I want to be able to perform well at over 500 yards. Obviously, i'm going to have to upgrade the optic and I have been looking at a Leupold 4.5x14x50 as long as that can provide me with enough magnification.

I have it zeroed at 100 yards currently. Is it worth my time making a Model 70 work, or should I scrap this one and start over with a Remington 700?

I just wanted to get ideas and/or opinions from experienced folks so maybe I can avoid some of the pitfalls of a first time build and save as much time and money as possible.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Wanting Advice On My First Build

Is this a push feed model 70 or a crf model?

If this is a recent manufacture crf model, it is basically a FN action, an excellent action to build on.

I don't know enough about the push feed to know if it is worth working up, the crf most certainly is.

Re: Wanting Advice On My First Build

I have a Winchester 70 too. I just ordered a Zeiss 4.5-14x44 scope over the Leupold Mk 4 4.5-14x50. I have a Heavy Varmint .308.

I chose the Zeiss over the Leupold for its fixed eye relief, reticle (Rapid-Z 1000), glass, 1" tube, and cheaper price (for similar configurations).

14x is more than enough for 500 yards. A 6.5-20 is meant for sighting in closer to 800+ yards at 20x.

If you ever want to sell your M70 and get a 700, any scope you buy can just be moved over to your new build.

It's one or the other, not both.

Does it have a large claw extractor down the side of the bolt? Will it extract a round if you only half feed it into the chamber? If it does it's controlled feed, if it doesn't, push feed.
