Kicking Ass Somewhere
Have a friend who's son was put on Ritalin when he was younger. He's 40 now and still lives at home. Smart kid, college grad and hard worker. Just never felt comfortable enough to leave home.

ADHD drugs are not the issue.

Anti depressants and anxiety meds are another story.

Also, parenting is an issue. Most parents medicate their kids until they are easy and are happy. These kids need enough meds to function. Not be a zombie. They also need behavior therapy (real help, not a pat on the back).

Most folks have trouble and seek a pill. Never pursue any other avenue to help their issues.

All said, mental illness is serious stuff, including depression, and seems to be on the rise IMAO. Also, heavy chronic use of weed is closely linked to later onset psych problems.

You would think the schools are getting a piece of the action the way they want to force drugs on the kids these days

Its not money.

They just dont know crap (most of them) about how to deal with a kid who doesnt fit their mold.
So its ignorance and laziness a huge % of the time.
Again, this is not all teachers. Just a lot of them. Some are amazing and have a true passion for what they do. Kinda like my work.

I ride my kids to be polite and respectful and that it is ok to ask questions.

I prefer they ask them at home so they get facts and not teachers union approved indoctrination BS.

99 problems and the gun ain't one . Forcing drugs on kids ain't new in the early 80's 1/2 the kids I was in school with were on Ritalin , the other 1/2 were trying to get the pills from the first 1/2 to use or sell . yea 80's

The cause and effect of SSRI's and other psychotropic meds with regards to mass shootings (or any other violence) is a difficult one. SSRI's are often prescribed at the first sign of any unhappiness - to the point that they are WAY OVER-PRESCRIBED. It is clear that hey help many people and have made a world of difference in the lives of many, but the first time some soccer-mom's kid doesn't get the lead role in the school play she gets put on an SSRI (and the kid probably does too in some sick Munchausen-by-proxy problem we have). So too many people are on SSRI's.

However, are the SSRI's causing this behavior or is being on an SSRI a marker of someone who has depression issues (a "red flag" if you will)?

It is clear that SSRI's increase suicidal tendencies in the first three weeks they are taken but after that I am not sure. I haven't been in that area of medicine in a long time so I am not sure if there are any new studies regarding violence/suicide and long-term use. And once again, that type of study is a difficult one because are people acting out because of the medication or because they naturally have the tendency?

@Schroedernd

Motrin is excreted by the kidneys, so the liver has to do with the drinking...... which any govt job will drive a man to.

Certainly possible motrin could cause GERD long term and I would bet a nickel in 10 min a decent GI doc could find several other things that may be causing or certainly exacerbating it.

I completely changed my food intake and pretty much never have it. And I still take Motrin as needed....: ?

I had it, where I was pooping them daily but after some serious diet changes it’s more like once s week if that. However, if I eat anything spicy or with ketchup I’m guaranteed to have issues so I’ll pop a Gerd pill beforehand but other than that diet changes have helped tremendously. Don’t drink as much, get rid of soda, quit eating processed food. You will be amazed st what happens! Oh and workout!

Lots of very good points.

Old granny woman once said, anything that goes in you, in small doses "can" be good for you, "can" mind you, food, drink, meds, substances.
OGW said, "too much" of 'ANY' of it "will" kill you. Dont take it if you dont need it, food, drink, meds, substances.
OGW was pretty smart for a hillbilly woman that graduated 3rd grade.... she lived to 103....

Now, in extreme sarcasm...... re meds.
A little opoid for pain, no problem.. . Say epidemic, lots of deaths, spiraling health costs...
A little antibiotic for that ant bite, no problem.. . MRSA, antibiotic resistant strains of stuff still being determined. Spiraling health costs...
A little ritalin for school kids.... versus attentive parenting and keeping kids focused, fed nutritionally, and physically active, no problem.. . Spiraling health costs and a little social problem...
SSRI's because .... versus attentive parenting, nutrition, focus, goals, standards, physical activity, and reactive work... no problem.. .
Spiraling health costs and a BIG social problem.......

Find the humans that need real medical intervention and treat them. There are a lot less of them that need meds, versus those who need focus, goals, and nurture by responsible adults and mentors as well as somebody who enforces standards.
There are problem children and problem adults that function just fine when properly directed and social standards hold.

Its not just the meds. It's some idiots 'thinking' meds are the answer to everything and over using them.

Now, that's just meds.

Not going into family structure, tribal structure, societal structure, and standards that hold resulting in something good for everybody in the family, tribe, or society.....

That's a little too complicated for the thinking animals who eat, drink, and pleasure to self destruction because it's all about them. Those manage to really f up a child's rearing, thought development, and future, because they teach the child to do whatever feels good, and dont teach the child how to deal with any form of failure to attain 'feel good', say, hello anger.....

And we see the results of that anger from failing to find 'feel good' every day.

Especially when ill advised meds cant produce feel good and damn sure cant manage the anger.

just another opinion from one who has had to clean up the bodies or pick up body parts one too many times. ymmv depending on the level of janitorial services you provide society.

The problem is multi faceted. To try to pin responsibility on one thing is foolish. That said, I dont have an answer, but growing up in the 50' and 60's I dont remember all this. It seems to have largely begun in the late 60's with the hippies and large drug issues.

Drugs are like anything else, they are a tool and can be used with wisdom or abused by ignorance and stupidity.

Drugging up your soldiers is nothing new.

"Kamikaze pilots received high doses of Pervitin before suicide flight missions. Japanese factory workers also used methamphetamine to work longer hours.

The German army ordered front-line soldiers and fighter pilots to take military-issued stimulants that contained a combination of methamphetamine and cocaine."

I don't think there is just one cause but most of the symptoms being treated stem from lazy parents or "not my baby" parents. Hold your kids accountable for their actions. Wear their butt out when they need it. I was about as hyper as they come, a poster child for ADHD if you will. Never took any meds for it. Watched what I ate/drank and watched for moms belt when I acted a fool lol. I knew what foods or drinks wound me tighter than a 2 dollar watch. Mom would even let me have them but she also told me" You know what this does to you. You can have it but you have to stay in control. You make the choice. If you don't think you can control it then don't eat/drink it." If I chose to partake and acted out, we went to the woodshed. I learned to regulate it myself. Teachers hands are tied these days because of lawyers and "not my baby" parents. Until we re-instill a moral compass and accountability things won't change. I also think the drugs are part of the problem too. Docs are bought and payed for by big pharma and are getting too lazy to find the root of the problem. It's easier and they make more money just prescribing a pill for what ails you. Ok rant over.
