Weapon reccomendation

Ok, I want to buy a new bolt gun. I know you can get Remington 700's pretty cheap....even at academy! I want to be able to shoot accurately out to 800-900 meters.

What is the best gun formthe money these days brand new? Don't worry about optics, I've got a pretty big pick.....leopold, USO, swarovski, and a few others. I want to be able to shoot steel and I also want to be able to hunt with it. Probably end up with a .308 because all of my ar platforms are. And, I want tobe able to use my suppressor on it as well.

Suggestions? Oh, and nothing with a wooden stock.....must be flat black or black.

Go for a Remington 5r mil spec I have two of these and they are tack drivers out of the box, mainly just need to be skim bedded.

Savage 10 is a popular choice as well. Tack drivers out of the box.

New 10FP comes with a threaded barrel with a thread protector that your can will spin right onto if you have a 24tpi suppressor. Add a good stock and the glass you have listed above and don't look back.

I have a Remington SPS Tactical with the 20inch barrel and I just shot 1010 yds at an IPSC target all day long. It got kinda boring actually because I thought it would be harder to hit with the shorter barrel, but it was a breeze. I personally hate the accu-trigger on the savage, but otherwise those are great rifles as well. The Remy is about $550 and you can beat it up and use it for hunting very easily.

There are plenty of options, but there's my experience.

Sh&t. Thats a lot of great suggestions. Just gives me more ideas....like taking an M14 and putting a modernized stock on it and the like.

I am going to take a hard look at the Remy 5 and the SPS. Pretty cheap so I can spend alot of money on the glass.

As said it tack drives from the box, so I just worried about adding all the extras I wanted.

Its a long rifle and I just love mine.

After some quick google searching there are slot of negative comments about the remy sps tactical which is what I was leading towards. Seems like alot of folks were having FTC problems from a magazine and lots had to be sent back to remy for repair.

As it's the Internet and a lot of what you see and hear is bs have any of you guys who have owned a Remington sps 20 in .308 had any out of the box issues?

Btw the gent with the fully tricked out bolt gun in black with the s&b scope on it has got one sweet rig. Nice job.

The vast majority of complaints around feeding issues are with the .223 rifles.

A new follower is pretty cheap if you need one and some sandpaper to smooth things out if required.

Also consider the Winchester stealth in .308.
It uses the FN action and comes in a very good stock. They can be had for less than an SPS tactical + B&C stock.

Custom accuracy out of a std. price, reciver grooved for scopemount so there is no really need for a picatinny rail that can come loose....

Tikka T3's are excelent.

My 5R Milspec as above has: Badger bolt knob fitted; Seekins bipod adapter and Magazine AI system; Atlas bipod and rear monopod; Night Force rings with Cosign and level; scope is a Zeiss Victory; moderator a titanium Quicksilver. The rifle is bog standard otherwise. It all comes in just about on/under 13lbs. The extras do add up to a tidy sum though. However, this 5r delivers and you would really be hard pushed to find anything that shoots better, factory or custom, in any field practical way. Its that good.

Not ammo sensitive and tack drives 165gr Hornady all day long. 5R's in 308 will shoot well out to 1000m but other calibres are a better choice for extended range. I believe 5R's come in 300 WinMag now but I don't know how well they shoot. I consider a 308 a 600m field calibre whatever any one else says.

not sure what your budget is but the Sako TRG-22 is a pretty fine factory rifle. Savage makes some great rifles for the money also....and so does FN and Remington.....zillion choices.

I think the SPR is the best buy going. It is accurate, the trigger is crisp and user-adjustable, it comes with a great mount and a choice of great stocks and, of course, it is built around the classic Model 70 action. After that, I would say you'd have to go up to a TRG-22 to see significant advantages in a factory rifle.
