Many people ever build on these? I know theres not as many parts aviable for them as the 700's. Was thinking about doing a .284 on mine, I can do the work myself so parts is all I will be out.

Thanks guys,
Kc

Re: weatherby Mark 5 build?

I built a 7 rem mag off my mkv. Being from Oregon, pacno did the chamber and barrel, BC stock (the worst part of the gun) Ken Farrell rings and bases. The orginal trigger was worked on and is very good.

As accessories seemed to be a little more expensive, but they are out there.

Like I have said before, if you have the action it is a great choice, but I would not suggest building off one if you have to go get a donor action. Since you have it in hand, go for it. What's not to love about a MKV

Re: weatherby Mark 5 build?

My Dad has several Weatherby Mk5 Threat Response Rifles in .308 so we decided to have Rock Creek copy the original .308 barrel contour, but in a 6.5mm 1/8tw to finish at 26" and turn one of these rifles into a 6.5 Creedmoor. He likes the feel of the original TRR stock. It should be pretty cool when finished. He sent info to EGW awhile back and they did make a 20MOA Pictinny rail for the .308 Mk5 TRR/Trigger from Timney and original bedding done recently by Score High Gunsmithing. Once the barrel arrives from Rock Creek, Jon Beanland will do his magic on it.

Re: weatherby Mark 5 build?

MKv is def a poppular hunting gun and is worth the build. but be carefull in my experience the mkv does have a tendancy to warp during the heattreating process. if you lay a straight edge along the side of the action you will find that they warp towards the ejection port due to its lack of material on that side. not all come from the factory that way but there are a good percentage that do. Most people dont realize it until its to late. If you lay the barreled action in a stock and the barrel lays hard to one side this is usually why.Just somthing to watch for.

Good luck to you sir

Re: weatherby Mark 5 build?

How do the Mark V lend themselves to building an accurate hunting rifle. Not that they are not already nor do I intend to offend anyone. But is there more time and effort put into them to true them up" especially the bolt lugs"? on my mark V only 4 of the lugs show wear the others look untouched. I have about 135 rounds down the pipe. 300 wby 180 Accubonds and a hot load.
Thanks Gents

Re: weatherby Mark 5 build?

With some help from a friend I built a 284 winchester on a Mark V six lug (non magnum) action. No effort was made to true the action. I haven't even lapped the lugs yet. On my good days it shoots 0.6 to 0.8 MOA. I suspect the gun is actually more accurate than that, but I need more practice to be certain.

Yep, some folks build on 'em:)

There could be MKV #4 on here pretty soon:)

Built in recoil lug, fluted bolt, 60 deg bolt throw, factory avail .580 bolt face, 3.815 OAL mag box......all in a factory action. Timney makes a great trigger, Near makes great bases. No DBM...if you need that for your application, than there are better actions. If your a hunter, I like 'em!

As far as 9 lugs, and precision...just my humble opinion, (a good bedding job not withstanding...)but the precision capabililty of a rifle has more to do with factors forward of the bolt face, and the operator aft of the butt stock, than the stuff in between.

As far as 9 lugs and strength...I've searched and searched, and can't find any strength/pressure testing to match the Weatherby MKV testing quoted on page 1 and 2 of this article. That includes custom actions.

Re: weatherby Mark 5 build?

Building a 6.5 x 257 weatherby right now with a Lilja octagon barrel. This is my third build, first weatherby I've done. I think the weatherby will make for a great custom rifle. The .284 would be great in one but I'm kinda partial to them as I've had one built for me (before I got a lathe), built one for my father-in-law and I'm in the middle of building another one for myself in a hunter, all these were on Remington's though. Good luck with your build!
