Re: weatherby Mark 5 build?
Yep, some folks build on 'em
30-338 Lapua Improved (Lone Wolf California Sporter, APS PK brake, Lilja #6, 10 twist 27.25", precision found 210 VLDs at 3300 fps)
338 Lapua Mag Improved (A-5, Holland Radial brake, Brux Medium Palma 9.7 twist 28", precision found 300 SMKs at 2925 fps)
338 Excalibur (Bell Carlson "new" TRR #6629, Hollan Radial brake, Brux Heavy Palma 9.8 twist 31.25", precision found 300 SMKs at 3080 fps)
There could be MKV #4 on here pretty soon
Built in recoil lug, fluted bolt, 60 deg bolt throw, factory avail .580 bolt face, 3.815 OAL mag box......all in a factory action. Timney makes a great trigger, Near makes great bases. No DBM...if you need that for your application, than there are better actions. If your a hunter, I like 'em!
As far as 9 lugs, and precision...just my humble opinion, (a good bedding job not withstanding...)but the precision capabililty of a rifle has more to do with factors forward of the bolt face, and the operator aft of the butt stock, than the stuff in between.
As far as 9 lugs and strength...I've searched and searched, and can't find any strength/pressure testing to match the Weatherby MKV testing quoted on page 1 and 2 of this article. That includes custom actions.
