I found a Weatherby Vanguard new for 350 bucks and have a few questions. How easy is a barrel swap? The gun is chambered for .270 win right now which im not really interested in. Is it possible to shoot a short action caliber such as .308 through the same action? How much availability is there for aftermarket?

Ed,
The Vanguard and Howa are the same action and take the same stocks. You can check out my post in bolt action rifle section : 260 rem built by aka-spook. The long action would be great for 30-06. Alot of the gun builders don't do Howa actions because of metric threads but aka-spook does great work. I have had Steyr, Rem 700 (stock & custom builds), FN SPR, and Howa action rifles. I prefer the Howa to Steyr and Rem 700. Action is smoother and ejection is more positive . Both Howa's I have or had where short actions.

The barrel change shouldn't be difficult for any decent gunsmith, but it is not a Savage with a barrel nut either.

You can shoot a short action round in the long action.

Depending on what you want from the aftermarket venue, a lot of the bases and such that work for the 700 also work for the Vanguard.

The Vanguard is a pretty good rifle, but for me without some work, it is more of a hunter than a long range setup. Those barrels are just a little light and heat up pretty quick.
