Just curious why there isn't more talk about Weatherby on this site..they have some very unique calibers and arguably some of the flattest rounds out there like the 257, 300 weatherby 30-378, 340, 338-378 just to mention a few. They seem to use great parts like Krieger barrels (on their upper level models), Howa receivers (extremely smooth from the factory), B&C stocks, and a great trigger pull.

Do they not hold up? is accuracy an issue?

Nothing more then just curious and conversation piece...they seem like great rifles so wondering why they are not more popular here.

Re: Weatherby

I had a Weatherby TRR a few years back, and it was a good rifle. I ended up getting rid of it because it just wasn't as accurate as I wanted. It did have some nice features though. I especially liked the bolt throw angle. It made for some nice fast bolt cycling, and guaranteed it I never had hand/scope clearance issues. There wasn't a lot of aftermarket support either. It I wanted a nice hunting rifle that would never see modification, and was a good 1 MOA setup, Weatherby would be a great choice.

Re: Weatherby

Weatherby rifles are nice and there are a couple floating around here. But the do have some limitations. First off the rifles don't carry much aftermarket support. Between finding a smith to work on them and then finding stocks, bases, and other parts/accessories it simply gets to be a headache. As for the rounds. As much as I loved my 300 wby I don't see me building another one just because of the expense involved. First off the brass is insanely expensive and on the soft side thus reducing the life expectancy. Also in order to get the dies and chamber to match up correctly you have to purchase your own set of reamers. No one has been able to get that double radius shoulder cut exactly the same way twice yet; thus unless your dies and chamber are cut off a custom set of reamers then you will loose some of your accuracy potential.

Re: Weatherby

The Weatherby rifles were fantastic rifles in the 70's, 80's, and even the 90's. Their cartridges were real barn burners. And were rivaled by few. They made a fantastic hunting rifle that was very dependable, and built very well.

Then alot of other manufacturers came up with new cartrdiges that were every bit as powerful as the WBY. cartrdiges. And these other mfrs. also upgraded their quality of rifles they built.

Weatherby did not upgrade alot. They just rode the coattails of the same rifle and cartridges.

They are not really known as precision rifles. Just good high quality hunting rifles. Nowadays there are lots of good high quality hunting rifles for less money. And with this current "composite" craze with stocks. The old Walnut standby is taking the back seat. Tom.

Re: Weatherby

Their new stocks suck and quality has definetly gone down, however I have an older 300 weatherby in a fiberglass stock that has killed truckloads of elk and mulies. If you buy one look for an older fibermark stock, much better!! IMO

Re: Weatherby

I'm in the process of a custom build with a Weatherby Mark V action and a Brux barrel in 338 Lapua mag. I am also having Kyle make me a XLR evolution stock for the Weatherby Mark V action so these will be availible thru XLR as soon has he is done withe mine.
