I took a drive around part of the state looking to see what was left out there to be had. I was focusing today on the northeastern part of the state. Basically north and East of Newington.

1) I have a new found respect for Hoffman's. I have for years been a big critic of theirs. Will get back to this in a minute.

2) I would not buy a thing even if it was the only place I could get it from was BMG Guns.

I walk in there and first thing I notice is MARK UP beyond resonable. Ok I understand a free market system and supply and demand. I am all for that. Example RGUNS Striped Lower 3X the retail price. Used magazines $40. But don't they realize that there are a few people in this state that do have a clue?

Ok so then a gentleman shopping for some AR magazines ask, are those as good or better then Magpul magazines? Out of the mouth of the salesmen comes Magpul magazines are garbage. Ok I understand some like them some prefer metal. But to say they are garbage? Really the number one selling magazines is garbage. I was amazed to say the very least.

3) Newington Gun Exchange. One of my favorite places to browse and see what they have hidden in that mess. I would probably love NGE if it wasn't for the mess of a place. I guess its the Corps in me that just can't look past it not being squared away. I will say I have never heard them give bad advice or anything even close.

4) I didn't go to River View seeing I wasn't sure they were open or shut down by the state and or Feds. But I will just say this. I have never liked the place. The back is always smokey from them smoking. The customer service there has never been acceptable to me. The help has never been even remotely knowledgable when I have been there.

5) Columbia Sports I always seem to find something hidden in this place actually worth buying. However that wasn't the case today.

Back to Hoffman's prices are normal. Stock is very low but some good products worth buy were in stock. One thing I didn't like was they wouldn't sell a case of ammo, limited to two boxes and no case sales. I guess I can understand that they want to be able to sell for their range use. So I will give them a bye on that. Everyone in there was busy but for the first time I have ever seen they were ALL FRIENDLY. Could this be a New trend for Hoffman's? I hope so.

In the end I didn't buy anything. I wanted some Titegroup and some Small rifle primers.

I did go to Cabela's they had a good amount of handguns rifles and shotguns but nothing I wanted or needed.

I might see what south central and western CT has tomorrow.

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

I went to the gun show in Memphis yesterday. I saw one stripped lower (spikes) with the tag marked $500.00. I almost shat my pants. I usually will tell people what I think but I kept mouth shut.

Several vendors had Pmags $50-$60. One very cordial gentleman asked me if I needed any at which point I offered a generous $16ea. He tried to explain his pricing and I politely explained how he was taking advantage of the people that keep his ass in business and that I would pray for an early bankruptcy for his business.

Lowest price that I saw on AR's $2300. The same one you could purchase last month for about $8-900.

To all the dealers hiking prices and taking advantage of customers that kept you in business for years, here's to your future going out of business sale and auction!!!

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

Fuck Hoffman's! Never go there again after they started their new policy about not selling an "assault style rifle" to anyone without a pistol permit. We have enough problems with the anti gunners in this state without them adding on calling semi auto rifles "assault style" let alone deny legal rifle buyers the ability to buy a rifle. Hoffman's can kiss my ass. They will never get another dime of my money.

And they were probably friendly because everyone on their Facebook page saying that everyone in there are usually rude, which they are.

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

I was able to snag 5 #'s of reloader 15 from Center sports in Columbia on Saturday and cci450 primers, that's my local shop for both archery and firearms!

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

Rob I was not aware of that. Yes they have always been rude and think they know more then anyone that walks in the door. I have always thought of their sales staff as a bunch of mall ninja's. Thanks for letting me know about that policy. They are back on the shitlist again.

Hunter87 I meant Center Sports, I don't know why I always call it Columbia Sports. Not a bad shop, like I said they always have something worth buying in there. But I do all my archery business at Hall's Arrow they have been better then good to me for over 30 years.

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

I haven't been to Hoffmans since they opened the new store but I have purchased a lot of firearms there in the past.

I know a lot of shooters in CT that are pissed off by the new policy
they started. It was a stupid move on their part.

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

Dragbag if you make it over to the eastern parts again near me, I live in Scotland look up Brooklyn trading post haven't been there In a long time but they did have everything at one time. There's also the Outpost over in montville near the casino, but been years since I've been there.

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

Another fellow CT shooter chiming in here, I am glad that I am not the only one to have bad experiences with these places. Hoffmans is terrible, they used to be Ok before they moved to thier new address. Now you can't get customer service if you begged for it. Riverview is even worse, you would think they would hire people who had even the slightest knowledge about guns to sell thiers, wrong. Not to mention Riverviews ammo prices are crazy. And you are also lucky you didn't waste your time going to Riverview, they are currently without there federal liscense and unable to sell, transfer, etc. guns. Its fun seeing thier glass cases covered in wrapping paper. But on a good note Newington Gun Exchange/NGE is fantastic. I know they are small, don't have a huge variety of many things you could be looking for and a little messy. But they get an A+++ rating for customer service and knowledge. Even when they are busy they will take the time and talk to you. I have sold and bought from them in the recent past and they are very fair.

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

BMG is outragous
was there about 3 weeks ago for the very first and the very last time
they want $500 for a new stripped lower
I think it was $440 for a 500 round brick of wolf shit ak ammo
$4,400 a A2 preban complete
$50 per for gi M9 mags
i think it was $60 for a ar 30 round mag

and they talked to me like i was an idiot and there shit was gold and i didnt know it
they'll never see me again
talk about raping the customer

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

I tend to agree with most of the comments. I can't even park at Hoffman's so I won't go there. I used to be a regular. They were always nice to me because they knew me. They move a lot of used guns and I like to look through the used stuff. I have gotten some great deals there. That said, I agree that the place is not friendly anymore and their inventory is far less interesting to me. Newington is pretty good. Nicer and with some good stuff. I don't mind the mess. I was in BMG once ... once! There are a couple of small shops in the SW section of CT where I live that I like. Never been to the shop in Columbia but will give it a try.

I have only been to the place in Columbia a couple times, took my permit class there, the place seemed nice and the employees were very helpful, just a long drive with other options so close.

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

Ah another gunshop here in CT making you have a pistol permit for a Smith and Wesson M&P 22lr rifle. JT's in Danbury just made the shit list. Anyone know what happened to Housatonic Valley Firearms in New Milford?

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

Might try to make it to K5 tomorrow only been there once a while ago. I have a job to do in the morning down that way.

As far as I know they are still open. I haven't been by there in a while though. I have done a lot of business with Vic at the Freedom Shoppe in New Milford though. You literally can't swing a cat in there, but he used to only charge $20 for a transfer, now he's up to $25.

I've been shopping at Hoffman's for over 20 years. I've seen them move 3 times. I've never had a problem with them. I'm not sure why they changed their policy, but it's not going to stop me from shopping there. I was just there this past Sunday. They had a huge sale this past weekend where they had 100 S&W AR-15's I asked how did the sale go, the guy behind the counter told me there was 300 people in line at 5am Friday. They were sold out as soon as they could fill out the paper work.

I have never hear anyone say anything nice about K-5

There is a new shop a few miles down the road in Orange. There are actually 2 shops in Orange now. One in the plaza where the Corner Pocket cafe is, and another one just opened up a few months ago in the same plaza as Namco.

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

Iamironman I have been around Hoffman's for over 25 years and they have never been good to go. Now knowing their new policy makes them completely off limits to me. Unless Housatonic moved they are out of business, was there today all dark and locked up empty.

MPrimo you been shooting clays? I should be bumped down to A class seeing I didn't shoot but two or three small shoots this past year.

Rob thanks I will check out CT Firearms.

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

dragbag, our club has been closed (until Feb) due to the Newtown thing ... we are only a couple of miles from Sandy Hook. Been to Dover and Mid-Hudson a couple of times but not nearly as much shooting as I would like. New rifle from PCR due to me on Friday so I am pretty stoked about that ...

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about Hoffman's.

Housatonic Valley is only open 2 or 3 days a week. It's something like Thur, Fri Sat, or Fri, Sat, Sun.

ETA, I just called, they are open.

Yeah I have a tree stand not far but have stayed away because of that. I need to get over there to pull it out now. Last shoot I have shot was the 2012 Good Friday Shoot at your club. Hopefully this year I will be able to make a few more local shoots. You shooting any of the early southern shoots? I am most likely not traveling to much this year, hope to get back to AA.

Thanks maybe this weekend I will try to make it back over there.

As for agreeing to disagree you are by far the minority, To feel that Hoffman's is good to go. Maybe you work there or are buddies with them. I can honestly say that of all the shooters in this state I know (and its a lot) your the only one that likes Hoffman's.

Re: Went window shopping today in CT

I went to a local gun show here in Colorado Springs this past weekend. Only two tables had any primers; what was $30 a couple weeks ago now was $40. Saw an AR M4 version with a $2600 tag. I didn't look at mag prices since I have a boatload, but overheard a couple conversations indicating that prices had been jacked up.

No reason to beat a dead horse dragbag. I have no affiliation with them whatsoever. I just have never had a problem with them.
