What action for a 223 build?

What’s a good action to start a 223 build. Looking to put a 16” Bartlien carbon fiber barrel and krg stock. Thanks

The only 700 223s I can find are complete actions for $600+

I shoot a R700 w a stainless Krieger barrel. It’s in a H-S Precision stock with a Timney and was spun up by some unknown gunsmith somewhere in AZ. Purchased second hand.

Suffice to say I think a R700 is “a good action to start a build” but if you want to save a little
Coin buy second hand.

Yeah a Surgeon w a CF barrel and AI chassis sounds fun and prob shoots one tiny little hole iF yOu Do YoUr PaRt.

Depends on if you're going all out or not. I'm old school (and old) so I still like the 700 actions. Not that costly, plenty of parts available, I'm not good enough to try to hit at 1,000 with a .223 yet, so I'm not even gonna have my SPS trued. (for now) Just gonna find a decent chassis, and scope, and see where it goes from there. It does have a nice single stage trigger tech trigger. I don't even hand load, and unfortunately this isn't the time to be starting, with components so hard to find...

I pondered the same thing back in 2019. Considered a R700 action with a Remage barrel, was looking into using an Origin action, but stumbled across a Tikka T3x Varmint in 223 (previous owner had the barrel threaded), and bought it. Put it in an MDT chassis and couldn't be happier.

I switched from Bighorn/Terminus to a Terminus 3-lug. Feeds 223, 223 Ackley and 300 Whisper like butter with MDT and AI mags.

A trued and blueprinted Remington action with a quality barrel will shoot just as good as anything else but I think it's a waste of money when you can buy a custom action that is ready to go.

Defiance Deviant would be my first choice but all of them would be better than a factory Remington.

Have one for my 300BLK/204 Ruger and if I didn’t already have a 223 DTA conv id probably would have gone with a Bartlein or Proof 223 prefit.

Anyhow, they’re nice and light, can use prefit barrels, no issues feeding on a MPA Ultralite with MDT AICS, Accurate 5 rounder (had to modify those for full COAL) and also no issues feeding from a HS DBM on a manners Ultra classic and you can always get a 308 bolt and just switch barrel. Also have the recoil lug machined all you need to swap barrel is the wrench and the barrel vise.

I work 70-100+ hours every week.
