What bullet seater are you using for 178 AMAX?

Currently I'm using a RCBS Competition Die to load 308 178 AMAXs. Overall I'm content with how the die functions. The problem is it always scuffs the tops of the bullets. The seater is narrow and creates rings around the tops of the bullets where they meet. I've cleaned it and very lightly polished it to no avail. I doubt this affects accuracy, but sometimes it does gouge the copper which is annoying..

I know Hornady makes specific seaters for their bullets, but I have not exactly that read many reviews raving about Hornady's dies.

Curious what others are using...

I use the deluxe Lee set. Haven't seen the issues you are talking about.

I use Hornady dies and just got my order from them for the AMAX/Match seater plug, works like a charm, no more indents on the bullet.

Re: What bullet seater are you using for 178 AMAX?

Used a borrowed Redding for a while with zero issues on many bullet profiles Amax primarily. I then purchased the Hornady dies and was very disappointed that they come with a seater plug for round nose .30cals or something, it marked all, deformed some, and even pulled a few bullets back out. With the Amax seater it works without issue, it should be the seater plug that comes in the .308Win set, instead of whatever the "universal" plug is. Because of this BS from Hornady I would not recommend them.

Re: What bullet seater are you using for 178 AMAX?

I use the same die for the 178's with no issues. Sounds like there might be something inside the die that you haven't seen yet. I know that the competition dies aren't cheap, but, I would swap out the die.

Re: What bullet seater are you using for 178 AMAX?

The ring is from too much neck tension\the thin jacket the AMAX\and-or super clean brass, the black carbon left inside the neck does allow for easier seating of bullets. I run .002 NT and get them, I have used Lee seater, Forster seater, Redding seater and now a Wilson inline seater with a K&M arbor press with seating force attachment, IMHO it's a cosmetic issue for this game, BR is a different story.

Re: What bullet seater are you using for 178 AMAX?

I've cleaned the die, but there still could be something. I tempted to get some fine steel wool out, but I don't want to throw the seater off...

Thin jackets? Could be it. I have been seating a lot of new brass and I only noticed it recently.

Cheers.

You might try annealing your brass. I've seen this happen if I let my brass get hard or working with brass sized to have a lot of neck tension.

Re: What bullet seater are you using for 178 AMAX?

I use a Forster seater it hasn't left any marks in the bullets I use which are 168, 178 amaxs and 175 smk. However my Forster seater in .270 left marks but was easily fixed with a drill and 600 grit sand paper.

Re: What bullet seater are you using for 178 AMAX?

In general I think Hornady bullet jackets are either softer or thinner. I really like the 75 BTHP but anything over .002 neck tension I get indentions. I can load 77 SMK's at .003 and not see any indentions at all. It also happens with 25 grains of Varget or any other compressed load. The good thing is that the indentions don't seem to affect accuracy, very strange.

Check this thread out http://snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=878552. There are a few methods in there. HTH.
