I am trying to find a 25-06 barrel, came across this on gunbroker. Guy is not sure if it is 6mm-06 or 25-06. He has taken a few measurements but cannot say for sure. WHat say you fine people?

If you scroll down to his comments, you can see his measurements. If anybody has any advice as to how to know for sure what it is, i will email him again.

Seriously!!

"Very nice Rem 700 custom barrel. Not sure which manufacturer, but it's one of the big ones. Also not sure if this is steel or stainless. May have been fired, but it's in great shape. The gunsmith that I got this from said he was reasonably sure this caliber was correct. An '06 shell fits nicely, and it looks like 6mm bore, so I think he's right. "

Re: WHat caliber barrel is this?

I think he's saying invest your money in a known reputable barrel maker and rest easy knowing your money was well spent. The poster of that add cannot tell the difference between stainless or chrome moly. That should be a hint.

Joel I know what it`s like to be on a low budget. An I also know how anxious I get to have a rifle put together. My advice to you is save up for a new barrel. You`ll have something to be proud of.

Thanks Redrider

This is a gun I only intend to hunt with, Deer and Antelope. I have already done a nice job refinishing a nice stock for it, just need a barrel. I have my first baby on the way (A BOY) theres no way I will ever to be able to justify spending $$$ on another gun as far as the Sunshine of my life is concerned, even though I hope for her to use it. A great guy from the forum is going to look in his "bucket-o-barrels" to see what he has. I may have to go with a .270, no problemo.

Thanks all for the great advice. Great forum

Re: WHat caliber barrel is this?

Joel if you just want a 25-06 remington barrel I'm sure some of these guys on here have some factory takeoffs. Probly get them pretty cheap and may even be unfired. IF a facotry takeoff will work for what you need just post an add in the WTT section of the classifieds. I'm headed to my smiths one day next week I'll see if I can find one there..

Re: WHat caliber barrel is this?

1) 6mm-06, although he probably can't tell you if it's a 6-06 AI either (6mm Catbird IIRC)

2) You should not spend your money on this, approaches like this are how a $100 project soon turn into $400 trying to fix what was screwed up in the "i'll go cheap" route.

Re: WHat caliber barrel is this?

Joel I don't think there is anything wrong with going cheap. I've been there and done it and still have to some times. The key to it is picking the "right" cheap/cheaper components. For what your wanting to do with the rifle a believe a good factory takeoff will do exactly what your wanting. I'll be on the look out for you something.

I agree, it sounds above like I said "don't go cheap" but what my intent was really: "This is the wrong way to go cheap"

I agree that going cheap can be good, even great sometimes. Heck, I got a 0 user round count (proof fired only) 223 Savage barrel off here for $25 and it's a pretty solid shooter.

Re: WHat caliber barrel is this?

Joel,

If you don't have your heart totally set on a 25-06, I've got a 700 30-06 barrel laying here that's been cut and recrowned at 20" with only a couple hundred rounds down the bore before the circumcision.

Yours for the asking, free to your door.

Al

Re: WHat caliber barrel is this?

Joel,

Congrats on the baby boy! You'll enjoy the heck of him.

On the barrel, don't get this one. He thinks it's a 6mm-06, which is not a 25 caliber. IMO, if you already have a 270 Win barrel, go that route. You can push the 270 a little faster than a 25-06 with the same weight bullet. I love my 270 Win rifle. I would chose the .277 bullets over the 25 caliber bullets every time. You have more options, plus the BC is higher on the 270 bullets.
What I would do is call around to some known gunsmiths, as many as you can find in your area. Chances are, one (or several) of them will have a take off barrel that can work for you. If you are not set on the caliber, ask for a 270 Win, 25-06, etc (even a 30-06). See how much they want for them, and make your choice. There's nothing wrong with factory take off barrels that have low round counts. Also post a WTB ad here, too.
Good luck with your project!

Re: WHat caliber barrel is this?

Alf, thank you so very much for your generous offer. The barrel I am taking off is an 30-06, so I wanted to go smaller with lighter recoil.

The rest of you guys, thank you for the great advice. The more I think about it, the more a .270 makes sense. More versatile, and if the Wife needs less boom, I can load 100 grain rounds for her.

Ive been on a few gun forums these past few years, this is by far the best. Wish I would have found it sooner.

Interesting enough, the way I found it, my Step-dad was a high-power shooter, he died last year, this site was favorited on his computer. I came here to see if I could sell some of his guns and equip for his daughters college funds, but I did not have enough post-count to list his stuff. Luckily a bunch of the guys he used to shoot with came together, bought all his stuff (paid more than it was worth). Girls are in school now, life goes on.

Re: WHat caliber barrel is this?

FWIW, I dunno if I'm doing something wrong, but my .270 win kicks as much as my .300wm..and it feels like my .30-06 kicks more than both of em.

Re: WHat caliber barrel is this?

You're welcome.

Hell. just keep the 06 barrel on there and shoot some 130 TTSX's. Normal yardage you'll not see a diff with the 270. Or grab some 125 Ballistic Tips and load 'em down for the better half. The ol' war horse has loads of versatility.

The gun was made in 47, and the barrel shows it's age, the stock is broken. I have refinished a very nice stock from a 700, the 721 barrel will not fit in there because of the swell for the rear sight. I plan on doing a little whittling to make the 721 action fit, but I won't have to do as much if I use a 700 barrel.

Re: WHat caliber barrel is this?

Sierra 110 Varmiters with a moderate load of 4895-speed powder makes for a pleasant shooting 30 caliber, be it 30-06 or 308.

Bow to and embrace the versatility of the 30 caliber bore diameter my son
