as the bullet slows down to the point of sub sonic it starts to become sub sonic and starts to become unstable.

If the rifle is keyholing at 50yds with a known good factory load (FGMM) then you definately have something wrong with the bore.

Then again, its a 12.5" barrel (which in my opinion has no place on a 308 that anyone expects anything other than a high CDI factor from).

First thought, is the barrel is shot out. Second one is you have another major problem with it. A 1:10 twist should handle up to 220 grain bullets with no problems.

Dirty bbl, I had this issue some time back - cleaned my rifle and the problem stopped. I think that at the time I had run over 300 – 400 round prior to cleaning.
I typically clean my rifle after every range visit.

Even a fouled 12.5 inch barrel should be putting FGMM out pointy end first for quite a ways......
Are you shooting with a can? Is there any possibilty the bullet is striking something on the way out (baffles or compensator if so equipped)?

Who shoots at 50 yds???
sight in is at 100 or 300 then 600 to 1000. you need to enjoy the capability of the catridge 50 yds gives no satisfaction

did you see the 12" barrel part? i would think the <span style="font-style: italic">rifle</span> was designed for 50 yards and in and maybe a maximum affective range of 300 yards.
i would have to guess that there is something wrong with the barrel or you are having baffle strikes if you are using a suppressor like someone earlier mentioned.

The bullet is coming out pointy end first (duh) but it's either not spin stabilized because of the heavy fouling, OR it's being tipped by something at the exit - misaligned flash hider or compensator?

Something wrong with the crown? I have seen copper fouling cause stability issues as well.

There was a thread on this for a 5.45 and it turned out to be cheap ammo.
Remember twist rate is relative to velocity... so with a 12" barrel, you might need a faster twist. I dont know.

The short barrel will yield a lower muzzle velocity, which would help with tipping stability. I wonder whether the bullet is fully spun up in that short distance? Add a lot of carbon in the grooves and it's not spinning fast enough to be stable when it exits.

For every formula i know how to run it should stabilize fine if my velocities are right. I would have to point twords dirty barrel

Actually the 5.45 S/W you referred to that was keyholing turned out to be a 556 bore chambered for 545, not bad ammo. The owner did remove the FH and inserted a 545 round nose first in the muzzle and it slid in to the case, tried a 556 round and it didn't go past the ogive.
In this case I still want to hear fif there's a muzzle attachment or can.

Barrel length is not going to affect stability. Yes its going slower but a 10 twist will work with close to a 200 grain bullets even shooting them sub sometimes. I just cant see that being the problem. I could be wrong though....
