Hello, all....new to precision/distance shooting and looking for some advice. I just got a Rem 700 SPS Tactical on a HS Precision stock with a Timney trigger, SS 10x42 scope. I have a little extra money to put into it right now, but not much. What's my next step? Buy ammo and start shooting the thing? Bipod? Upgrade rings and base (they are middle of the road right now)?

Thanks for helping me orient my compass.

Upgrading the base and rings depends on the mounting system you currently have. Bipod is must for me, but not entirely necessary. I say buy some match ammo and put some rounds down range. Once you do that, you will know what to do with it next, or at least have some questions.

Ballistic software for the smartphone of your choosing. Shouldn't cost you more then $20.

Then a kestrel. If no kestrel then use weather reports from the nearest airport.

Thanks for the advice. I see a trend. I do belong to a range; unfortunately, it's only 100 yards. I do have access to longer ranges...now to find someone to coach me.

As for smartphone aps, what's a 'smartphone?' :)

I am ambivilent about a bipod...I have shot using a ruck for support, but I am sure I will get one at some point anyway.

Will invest in ammo, ammo, ammo.....
