Rifle Scopes What does everyone think about Barrett B.O.R??

Re: What does everyone think about Barrett B.O.R??

It is way overpriced for something you can only put on one rifle. Get yourself an all weather pda like a recon. Put the NF ballistics program on it, get a Kestrel and you will be able to do a lot more with that for a little more money than the BORs.

I guess I am not really sure what needs to be updated. The mathematic formulas never change, or do they have listed bullet bc's that are updated? I do like the bullet bc calculator on their web site though.
Does Exbal have windage adjustments? I also like how the NF has all their reticles, and you can look at hold over distances with a point blank of your choice. You can also calculate it at different powers on you scope for a sfp, although I haven't experimented with this yet to see how accurate it is, but I don't see why it wouldn't be.

edit: nevermind I searched a littler further and see that Exbal has these calculations as well.

Re: What does everyone think about Barrett B.O.R??

I've never run the Nightforce version, so I'm not aware of specific differences. The Exbal version does have both windage and target lead adjustments, and the bullet BCs are being updated.

For example, the version I'm running has the BCs for the .308 Sierra 155 grain Palma Matchking, which is a relatively new bullet - it came out last year. That particular bullet has BCs in four velocity ranges.

However, manufacturer's BCs are notoriously optimistic. I find that I have better results if I use Bryan Litz's BCs.

For example, if I use Bryan's G1 BC for that bullet in Exbal, the result under the same conditions for a 1000 yard shot agrees closely with the G7 calculation in the Berger Ballistics program which Bryan wrote.

Prior to getting access to Bryan's BCs, I had to adjust the BCs in most ballistic programs to get them to match my field shooting results, which was the only method I had for validating BCs.

Re: What does everyone think about Barrett B.O.R??

I have not used a BORS before.
I have read reviews and opinions on this unit.
I have noticed at least somewhat of a pattern with the pro and con opinions.
It seems there will be con arguments then someone chimes in that is actually using it and says it works great.
Now, another pattern I have noticed here on the 'hide is that peoples investments sway their opinions rather heavily.
So, the question is, are the opinions stated above based on first hand knowlege having used the product?

Thanks.

Re: What does everyone think about Barrett B.O.R??

Psychologists have terms for the influence which having purchased a product has on people's opinion of it. People are biased toward believing that they have made good decisions, and are reluctant to admit having made bad ones. Some call the phenomenum "confirmation bias".

I was involved in a hands-on test of a BORS which was furnished for testing and not purchased. I was unimpressed. I'm not saying that the device is defective, or has no value, but rather that there are other more cost-effective and less cumbersome ways to achieve the purpose of it.

Re: What does everyone think about Barrett B.O.R??

I am planning on getting one for a 5-25x56 S&B, only issue I can see is that they are charging a huge amount for the S&B version. I have been offered a great price on a unit but its not an S&B unit. So now I need to figure out what it will take to mount it to the S&B scope, if its possible.

Not a solution for any problem that did not already have a solution. Oh yeah, they are not universal in regard to scope model and fitment. One more strike...
