what does everyone use for stock riser?

Re: what does everyone use for stock riser?

Stay away from Karsten, the plastic wears out and then it slips, you'll have to add set screws, before you know it, your stock is filled with holes.

Get an Eagle industries or similar brand stock pack, cut a mouse pad into strips and place them under the stock pack to get the proper height. once you have the right height, shoe goo them together with a strip of velcro so they don't slip. This will be the most rock solid and comfortable stock pad you will ever have. I picked up an Allen brand stock pack at my local sporting goods store for $12.00 plus a $3.00 mouse pad and I am at $15.00. Karsten charges $50.00+ for his $2.00 sheet of kydex and screws.

You can also make your own kydex cheek riser with a sheet of kydex and a heat gun. Heat up the kydex, and form it around a 2x4 wearing thick gloves. Select your mounting hardware at a your local hardware store and save yourself about $45.00.

Re: what does everyone use for stock riser?

What kind of rifle/stock and scope setup are you using? Details get you help, and being vague gets you ignored or led astray. If you can, add in a picture too.

You can go cheap and functional with some foam mat and riggers tape, simple and inexpensive with a stock pack, or you can go for an actual adjustable retrofit like the Karsten that HN7 recommended.

Problem I had with Karsten B model is I was putting it on and off (you have to remove it to run a rod through the barrel), the kydex eventually wore out against the hardware and it began slipping. I contact Karsten about the problem and he pretty much told me to go pound sand, that his product wasn't defective.

How about letting every one know the whole story . When you 1st contacted me you were abrasive and told me right off the cheek piece was defective. Something along the lines of any time metal and Plastic are combines the plastic is going to lose.

You had just installed the rest and couldn't get the inserts to tighten down cause you hadn't read the Hints and Tips sheet..

You explained the square portion of the bolts rounded out your slots....You told me you had a B model and when asked if you had shortened the bolt as the insert is a Blind Nut (as stated in the directions) you admitted you didn't....Installation issues I have no control over.

If you hadn't continued to berate me and the product I would have sent you a replacement but after your 3rd rude email I said to heck with it....You would never be happy.

When the dealer you purchased the cheek rest from contacted me to see if I would ship him a replacement he also made mention that you were being a jerk to him as so I told him what I thought.

There, the whole story now I am outa here.

I believe you have me confused with another dissatisfied customer, as I purchased mine directly from you, not another dealer. I was the one that was emailing you about the stock slipping under the recoil, and your advice was to boil the cheek rest, then you ignored the rest of my emails.

Sorry but now your story has changed again from your original post of the Kydex Wearing to a fitment issue. The only reason I would say to warm the cheek rest in boiling water would be to fit it tighter to your stock if need be....Take all of 15 seconds and has nothing to do with knobs, bolts, hardware.

Then in the same post your issue goes from Wear to Fitment to Slippage due to recoil....B Model Locks into One position and can not slip.

I did have one shooter that had an issue with slippage I switched his A Model out for a B Model and he was happy. He was also shooting a .338 Lapua. I did that at No Charge as well.

So which is it...the Kydex wore out cause you didn't read the instruction and rounded out the slots, still wont cause the cheek rest to fail...1st story and my best guess.

The Kydex wore out cause I told you to boil it where there was no reason for me to tell you to boil it and reshape it?

Then the 3rd issue of slipping with a B Model that locks down solid into one position and will not move with out removing an Insert?

As for who you bought the cheek rest from...Hey you might have bought it from me and later gone to my dealer in Colo Spring and see if he could get you a free one...either way, I have only talked two 2 okay 3 to 6 people that had issues.

One guy with a B Model the messed up the installation and was pissy from the get go.

One shooter with an A Model and a .338 Lapua and I switched him out for a B Model

The other 3-6 people were fitment issues that took 15 minutes to fix and many of them even called me called me back to say all was well.

But I remember you and your email...I should make a metal insert to somehow glue into the slots....Can do for another $100 between tooling, subbing out work and bigger fitment issues....You are the only one that has voiced any complaints and now you have 3 different issues.

If you can break one, make one fail short of driving your truck over it I will replace it free of charge....I am and can't be responsible for someone not reading the instructions.

Now you have 3 issues going..The Kydex wore out. The Cheek Rest Didn't fit or it was slipping....

Which one?

Simple questions and maybe you can clear them up?

This place doesn't need drama..I stand behind what I make and if any one has issues they want to talk about, email me.

I was banned a few years ago and never came back. I see I have 5 pages of PM's going back to 08, sorry I never got back to anyone.

Re: what does everyone use for stock riser?

I'll chime in. I've got two Karsten cheek rests, an old A model I bought new from a private party and a new B model purchased directly from Karsten. I like 'em both, the B model better, and have had no problems with either. If I need another one, it will be another Karsten!
Karsten, I don't know why you were banned, and don't care. Welcome back to the Hide.

Re: what does everyone use for stock riser?

My Karsten works great. When I drilled the holes in the stock, I filled the hollow stock drip by drip with 2 part epoxy. So now I have a more solid stock in addition to an adjustable piece. I dont remove the Karsten to use the cleaning rod, I just loosen the nuts and drop it to the bottom (this is the older model rest), then the rod clears. Takes about 5 seconds.

Dude really, you have me confused with another person or persons. I do not live in, nor have I gone to Colorado Springs. I also have never bought from, contacted, or in any other way done business with a dealer in the entire state of Colorado; whether it be purchasing, returning, or in any other way complaining about your product.

Plain and simple my complaints about your mounting hardware failing, causing the rest to slip, whether that be during dry firing, or more often under recoil went straight to you.

Instead of offering to take a look at it, or at the very least ask for pictures of what I was talking about; You instead told me that I had not properly fitted the rest and I needed to boil it. You turned it in to a fitting issue with your own imagination. When I told you I had not, and had no need to, you insisted the problem was due to an improper fit and refused to do anything about it.

You didn't even want to see it to determine for yourself what may actually have been the problem. Your mind was so made up that your product could not possibly have failed which; I am assuming that is why you stonewalled me and did not respond to any further emails.

I'm sorry sir, but that is not how a reputable company conducts business.

Hope this jogs your memory and clears things up.

Re: what does everyone use for stock riser?

olywa,
I need a better cheek weld too on my new rifle as many 50mm scope objective users find. My eagle stock pack is gonna take 8 weeks to come in. Soooo, in the mean time I'm gonna use a couple of chunks of foam sleeping pad and wrap it in some 100 mph (duct) tape.
It's not gonna look pretty, however, it's gonna do the trick! I think a rifle that has some of these improvised fixes looks great AND functional. In the end...It's gonna put the lead where I want till the eagle comes in.
