What is the box test? It's mentioned in all the reviews on snipercentral.com, but I have no idea what that is. I have used the search function here and googled it with no success. Could someone indulge me in explaining this please.

Re: What it "shooting the box"?

It's testing the tracking of a scope, in most cases people make the adjustments and shoot in a Square making sure the scope returns to zero and tracks properly.

I use more of a right angle, and you can see a poor representation of one on home page if you watch the Super Sniper Video posted there, I show how I add the reference points, measure in the scope and then shoot. But some just measure and make a pretty square box.

The limitation is, you have to move a lot in order for errors to show, a lot of people will run a box test using less than a 10" square box and many errors won't appear beyond shooter error until well past 20".

Re: What it "shooting the box"?

Running a box test at closer range will allow you to use more of your scopes adjustment without running out of paper. Wind is also less likely to cause errors independent of the scope.

The drawback is that the errors will not be magnified like they are at greater ranges.

I run it at 100 yards with as large a piece of cardboard as I can find.

However I do like Frank's idea because it tests scope and reticle in one shot. In my tests I shoot it first, then measure it with the reticle afterwards.

Re: What it "shooting the box"?

I used to run the box test, but after seeing LowLights right angle test i think that i will be running those from now on. Alot easier and checks the reticle as well

Re: What it "shooting the box"?

Oh boy, I have a lot to learn. So it sounds like folks do this test often? What problems are likely to be found? Do you have to do this more than once with a new scope, or is it done periodically to check the scope is functioning correctly?

Re: What it "shooting the box"?

I do it periodically(about 2 times a year, might be overkill though) to make sure that the scope still tracks true. meaning if you put 2 MOA or 2 mils on the turrets thats the adjustment you get.
