I'm planning on buying a savage as my first rifle because I've seen good reviews about them and they are within my budget.

I wanted to know what you guys thought in terms of what is a good model that is under $500?

I would like a bolt-action 6.5 CM that I could change out the barrel sometime in the future.

I love my 12FV in .223. With handholds, it shoots right around .6 avg with the factory barrel with 69gr pills, and right under .5 with 52gr Bergers. The only thing I did right away was put a B&C Varmint stock on it.

The 'stock' stock did not feel comfortable to me.

Ill second the 12FV if youre buying a savage. It has a decent barrel that wont walk after 3 shots like the thin sporter barrels. I see no point it paying more for one than what they go for on sale. Ive seen word of them being had for 299 after the rebates. Who knows when the next rebate will come around but its at least several times a year that I have to hold my self back from buying one in 204 just because they can be had so cheap on occasion.

The Savage 12FV is a great value at $419 from Cabela's. The limitation from a PRS match style perspective is the magazine capacity and the stock. As your budget allows, you can upgrade to a chassis such as the KRG 180 Alpha, add a magazine of your choice and you're ready to compete. I've built a few budget Savage based rifles, and out of the box every one shot sub-MOA. The Accu-Trigger (once you get used to the safety blade) is as good a factory trigger (US manufacturers) as you'll find. When the barrel is shot out, there are plenty of pre-fit match barrels that you can install yourself.

You should buy the new 6.5 cm 110 accu-fit stocks. Its around 600ish+. I saw one on Cheaperthandirt.com in FDE. It looked like a good value?
You don't need a new stock. All you need is a scope, bipod, rings, ammo. Go zero and shoot from there and you'll figure out what it lacks for under 1K.
Pick a Athlon scope that fits your budget and a harris bipod. Hit up athlonscope guy here for a package w/rings. Buy some factory ammo!

I have a 10T 6.5CM that has shown some very promising results so far with various factory ammo. I’ll be practicing with it more this weekend, but so far it looks like it has some good potential. I’m actually planning on using it for some 1000 yd matches.
