I'm looking for a hunting rifle (I've decided on 308 as I already have several smaller calibers), that can also be taken to a range to punch paper at 600 yds as well. Weight is a concern, but not paramount (in the event it gets lugged around the hunting trails for several miles). would like to keep it around 9-10 lbs if possible. What is important is OAL so I'm looking for a short barrel (16"-18"). I'd like to keep it at or around $1000-$1200 when all is said and done. I have bipods, bases, rings, and a sling already. (So i figure ~$600 for the rifle, ~$250 for a stock or $800 for a rifle with good stock from factory, and ~$400 for an optic. A threaded barrel would be nice, but not a deal breaker.

I'd like to get .75-1 MOA accuracy. I do reload.

    What are some suggestions?

I am not current on savage offerings, but I do see suggestions of savage rifles in that price range.
In remington, the 700 AACSD fits the top of your budget and offers the 20" threaded barrel.
Hate to say it, but there are many, many threads on this topic. Your best bet is to read, read, read.

Before you get any meaningful answers you are going to need to be much more specific with your requirements. What is your specific intended use? Why is weight slightly a concern? Does it need to be new? And also much more specific with budget...you need a rifle, optic, scope base and rings, maybe a bipod, a sling, etc. does the $800 need to cover all of this? Is there an additional budget? Do you have some of this equipment already?

If you are more specific, you should get some great answers. There is a ludicrous amount of experience and information here on the hide. But you need to do your homework and ask great questions to get those great answers.

Edited my post with more details. Thanks

...check out the Weatherby Vanguard rifles, the new ones have a very comfortable, classic Weatherby designed stock, three-position safety, internal magazine holds five rounds, excellent factory trigger and the best part is the barrels are heavy (a lot of shank), they can be cut down/threaded to shorty lengths and still have enough beef/stability/weight to reach out 600yds with quality optics. Factory Vanguards run $550 retail or so, cost you $125 for the cut down/threading, spend $500 on a decent scope and you're still within your budget. Vanguards are some of the best rifles/best features for the money...don't tell anybody, good luck!
