Rifle Scopes What rings to get?

Ok im about to finally finsh my first rem 700 build.

I have a rem 700 sps tactical 20" barrel. Im sure you guys/girls know the specs.

Ok to get to 1000 yards what rings do i need im going with a 1 piece 20moa base. I have a bushnell 3200 elite. Right now its zeroed at 100yards and is using 50moa of adjustment.(The dial is sitting right on the 5th line on vertical adjustment)
So what would be a safe bet on rings to get that down to where i can hit the 1000yard mark?

I hand load my own ammo. From what the recipes says im shooting right at 2700fps. Will be getting a chronograph soon i hope. This is with a 175gr sierra match king.

Thanks all,

Shadow

Re: What rings to get?

Shadow,

Hard to know where to start......

1) Your rifle is zeroed @ 100 yds currently, without any rings at all?

2) Do you already have a 20 MOA base already installed?

3) Which 3200 do you own?

4) If your Zeroed why is your dial sitting on the 5th vertical line, and you have not reset it to zero?

5) The type of rings you buy generally have nothing to do with enabling your rifle to shoot @ 1000 yds

6) If you need 50 MOA of vertical up adjustment just zero @ 100 yds, you have far more problems than can be solved over the internet.

I'd be happy to help you if you wish to come east a few hours.

Re: What rings to get?

Bobin's right on. Get whatever rings you want. I'd try and get a height which will keep your bell close to the barrel. What you need to know is how much total UP elevation you have left in your scope AFTER your mounted and zeroed.

Re: What rings to get?

I have 0 moa bases and super cheap leupold rings.

How i understood it is that with a 20moa base and high or medium rings i should be able to get most of my up elevation back.

I have the 3200 10x mildot. The scope has a total of 8 vertical lines up. Which im guessing means 80moa of total up adjustment. So i have roughly 30moa of up left with the shity rings and bases. So if i get medium rings and a 20moa base i should be able to get about 30 or 40moa back correct?

I am still a noob at this and sure i am totaly looking at this the wrong way.

Also bob i would love to come down and get some tips and lessons i can shoot a good group at 100yard but that dont mean shit at any range past that. I need to learn im just starting out. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: What rings to get?

The height of rings (med, high, etc.) will have no bearing on gaining back the usable MOA elevation in your scope, a 20 or 30 MOA base however, will.

Re: What rings to get?

Brother, get your 20 moa base and a set of rings that will mount your scope close to the rifle. I try and leave about one eighth (or a little less) inch between barrel and bell end of scope. After you have zeroed your new settup, literally use your elevation turret and count how many moa you have left on your UP adjustment. Think you're gonna need somewhere around 36 or 37 moa to get to 1K, maybe someone with a program on here can get you closer but you'll have to shoot it to find out for exactly.

Re: What rings to get?

Get a 20MOA base and the lowest rings you can get as long as your scope is not greater than a 50mm obj. With a 50mm obj, I ran the Burris XTR lows and later the Seekins Lows on the same rifle and there was plenty of room. Anything higher than that and I was doing the "chicken neck". I tried the Burris XTR Med's to start and they were WAY too high for me.

I dont know anything about your scope, But I was able to get out to 1000yds with my SPS using a 20MOA base, low rings and a Falcon 5.5-25x50 scope.
