Re: What scope for my 338 Lapua

Heys guys quick question just wondering for anybody out there that has this gun and scope combo what type of case do you run? I got a 52" long case its made by plano it was $120 it fits in there length wise but with the big scope and everything it really didnt want to close it had a huge buldge and I dont want to keep it crunched down like that. any suggestions thanks

Pelican 1750 is a great option but it costs a bit more.

Length wise it may be tight but it should fit. No problem with height or depth with a large scope and a tripod. I plan on ordering one from Midway this week while its on sale. At least if it does not fit as well as I would like Midway will take it back.

Los338 - consider getting a Near Alpha mount, you can have these custom made with a slope. When I first put my 338LM together, I had a NXS 5.5-22x56 mounted via a Near 25-moa base and a Near 20-moa Alpha mount. Since then, I have moved up to a S&B 5-25, but stayed with the same 45-moa sloped system.

Hey , yeah I just ordered the long 56" drag bag from Midway it was $65 on sale plus shipping, I mean the 52' plano case I bought fits the rifle but I have a little bulge when its fully closed cause of the scope and I hvanet even mounted the Bipod on yet so it may be worse... Anyway from what I understand you shouldnt store your gun in a case anyway with the foam interior cause it doesnt breathe and causees damage to the weapon that is what I have always been told. Is this true? I guess i can keep it in my drag bag from Midway..

Oh forgot I also ordered the Midway Sniper Shooting Mat on sale for $45 man what a great buy my buddy has the Blackhawk which was about $250 and I tell minus a few pockets the Midwayfelt better more padding it was longer had the PVC no slip for the Bipod legs real nice shooting mat I mean $45 you cant go wrong..

I am new to this, so why should I move to a Near Alpha Mount and a 45-moa sloped system. thanks bro

I didn't go back and read if you changed your mind but didn't you order a NF 8-32 ?

You only have 65 moa travel so the 45 moa base/ring combo wouldn't work if you plan on having a 100-200 yard zero. The scope won't be able to dial down far enough.

If you plan on primarily shooting normal distances like out to 1200y or so a 20 moa base would be fine. You can always dial up and holdover for the rest out to the limits of your rifle/scope system.

I use a HDMR with H-59 reticle (26 mils travel) and a 30 moa base. I can dial up 25 mils and holdover another 30 mils "if I wanted to"-not

With the Horus reticles one can distinguish .1 mil easily, the exception being when the scope is dialed to lowest mag.
