What should I do?

Well its getting to be that time again. Currently I have a .223 AR for plinking fun, a semi-serious Rem700 .308, and a damn serious EDM M96 Windrunner in 50 BMG. I love them all. But now I'm looking for something new. Here are my options in no particular order:

1- Kimber/Night Hawk custom 1911 with trigger job
2- 10/22 custom job (action, trigger, barrel, stock, etc.)
3- Replace the 700 .308 with a GAP FBI HRT, Surgeon Rifle, or AI.
4- Send in the 700 to GAP to be trued and a new barrel be fitted.
5- .338 Lapua Magum/Edge

(Options 3 and 4 are mutually exclusive. I don't want/need 2 .308s)

Reasons for each:
1- I want a great side arm
2- I grew up shooting 10/22s and would love to be able to go out and relive my younger years
3- Would like a more sophisticated .308 setup
4- See above
5- Planning on going moose hunting next year and want something with a little more punch than a 308 (and that weighs less than the M96)

So what should I do?

Re: What should I do?

By the way, I know this might be in the wrong section but it doesn't fit the semi-auto (bolt action .308), the bolt action (10/22 and 1911), or the side arm & suppressor threads (308, 10/22, and 338). If any of you guys know of a better place, let me know and I'll send it there.

Re: What should I do?

If your looking for a great 1911 and don't want to spend the extra for the NighHawk custom I'd look at a Springfield TRP model. I've got one and it's a great sidearm. If you'd like to run it let me know we could meet up somewhere. As for the 10/22 you can build one of them yourself just use Kidd parts and you'll be good to go. As for the 308's either way you'll have a rifle that should shoot lights out. Havn't got any info on the 338's.

Let me know if you would like to run the TRP and we'll meet up.

Go for the 1911 handgun! You're pretty well heeled with the long guns you own, but when you want to run out and do some shooting without a bunch of excess baggage, a handgun is my choice. You can informally pling or get some serious practice - your choice!

Re: What should I do?

I think I'm going to go the 10/22 route. Ultimately I'll have all of these, I'm just talking about whats NEXT...

I'm just imagining the Windrunner (Clubber) with the .308 (Apollo) in front with the AR (Rocky) in front of that and then a 10/22. Thats a kodak moment right there.

Thanks for all the comments and help. I might take you up on that offer, Hooks.

Re: What should I do?

I'd narrow the list down to the 1911 or the 10/22 build. Buy all Kidd parts and you'll be amazed......its not the same world it used to be for 10/22s. I would expect sub MOA to at least 100 yards.

Re: What should I do?

Get the Nighthawk. You won't need a trigger job. I like the TRP but if you put the Nighthawk and the TRP in your hands, you WILL pick the Nighthawk. You can add a little to it and they have a new .22 conversion slide that is supposed to be awesome. I am saving for one right now.

Re: What should I do?

I don't know how I feel about putting a 22lr conversion into any other caliber gun. I guess I'm a purist, but if you buy a gun in a certain caliber be happy with that caliber. I understand the training argument where you might like to feel the weight of the gun and can practice trigger pull, but other than that I don't think anything compares to the recoil felt of a 45 vs 22, or 223 vs 22, etc.

But then again, I sure do love old El Caminos (Caminoes?) and Rancheros (Rancheroes?).

Now as for the Kidd 10/22, they sell this "Completion kit with bolt" option. http://coolguyguns.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=12&products_id=13

Now if I buy that, its my understanding that the only other things I need are a receiver and stock. Am I correct?

Re: What should I do?

Only get the 338 Lapua if you want it for shooting. It's a ridiculous amount of overkill for hunting moose. However, if you want one it will certainly do the job if you will practice enough with it to be proficient. A hunting weight 338 Lapua isn't going to be real friendly to shoot.
