Looking at making a few (3) metal targets for my 22lr. I want them for shooting from 100 yards out to 300 yards.

What size do you guys sugest I make, I was considering a 3x3, 4x4, and a 6x6. I realize they are all quite large for the 100 yard shooting but I doubt I'll spend much time at that distance anyway.

Another question is, how accurate is your rifle at those distances? If your rifle can't group within those targets at the longer distances, it'll just be frustrating.

You may want to take a look at our SH Long Range monthly competitions above, under the rules and guidelines we shoot metal.

I agree, you have to have the rifle with a good setup to go after 200 nd 300 marks. 2.5 to 3 inch gongs at 100 yards is no roll over without a proper scope and ammo, mainly ammo at all ranges.

Good luck!

thanks, haven't tried it past 100 yet but it holds under 1moa at that distance.

It's been raining a about......10 days here now so once the weather gets better I'll give it try out to 2-300.

I will be shooting from prone with bipod.

i made "mini ipsc" targets from the rectangular steel plates you find along railroad tracks and some 1/4 flat stock i had laying around. i think they're about 9'' x 6'' (ish) with a 3''x3'' head or so.

we shoot them at all kinds of distances, if you want it to be harder, aim for head shots only.

Since you are just starting out at 300 I would get a 4x4 square ft sheet of paper, or larger, till you get on and see what you can do with it. Don't make it tougher than necessary.

alot depends on that

and i'd do that first to get a size you are comfortable with before cutting up some steel.

Here is my setup:

Gongs for 300, 200 and 100

Some fold up, some hang...

Here is a pic of the hanging 300 yard one on the far left for dimensional reference:

One of my best groups ever at 300 yards. Dead calm conditions. Lapua Master M ammo. Not average...

If I were to make one generic size for each distance, it would be the following:

2.5"x2.5" for 100
6"x6" for 200
15"x15" for 300

Regular 3/16" carbon steel works fine.

I can say don't use an old skill saw blade... swings nicely, dies quickly (even at 300 yards).

Re: What size metal "gongs" do I need?

When I started shooting metal at 200 yards,,, after getting on paper I switched to these (found them in my picture album) three gongs. They measure left to right; 6x7, 5x6, and 4x5 inches.

I just worked my way down shooting them from left to right - largest to smallest. I have even had pretty good success on a 3.5 x 3.75 inch gong at 200 yards, though I feel 4 inches is plenty good at 200 and one can become consistant with a little bit of work and proper equipment - especially the 20 to 25 MOA Scope Bases. I highly recommend those.
