Sort of a poll - trying to get a target bullet speed decided upon.

To what speed do you load your SMK 175 grain, in 308?

In my rifle, Federal GMM crono's at about 2700.
So that is the speed I load to.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

Bout the same. 2730.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

Barrel is a 26.5" Rock 1 in 11.25

44.6 Varget gives 2790 ft/secs, which is too hot for the AAC Cyclone which then gets 43.8 grains and a velocity of 2720 ft/secs, the next lower node. All done in Lapua cases with CCI BR primers, 2.835" COL

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

Today, my bughole group chrono'd right at 2900 fps. Out of a 308, yes.
Winchester brass
175 smk .010 off lands
CCI LR primers
46.2 gr Alliant Power Pro 2000 MR
24 inch 1/10 twist barrel
I verified this through 10 rounds. This was my accuracy load after barrel break in, it was running 2750 then. I'm about 500 rounds into the barrel now, and this powder is ROCKING it. My starting load with 178 amax's (45.4 grains) was running 2800+! I even ran a known couple of 223 rounds over the chrono to make sure she was reading right.

Not a single pressure sign via primer, bolt, or shellholder test.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

2650 fps from a 22" 1:11.25" barrel. Look up Adaptive Density Altitude Card, it's kind of like a Mildot master format DOPE card for 175smk at different velocities. It's so useful and accurate that I changed my load to run velocities that would match their card, and then went backward to see which was the most accurate.

WOW. That's incredible. What is your dope from 100-1000?

I am using 45.5 Varget and my chrony indicates 2650, but my trajectory indicates 2825 or so. Takes me 32 moa, 100-1000 yards.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

2600fps at the chrono positioned 12ft from rifle. 24", 1:10 barrel.

I had a higher accuracy node just above 2700fps but stayed with 2600fps as it gets me out to 1000yds with no problems.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

My 175's are running at 2680fps with the following.
Hornady match brass (same results with Federal match)
Winchester primers
27.5gr of 2000MR
2.820 OAL
from a 1:11.25 5R 24" barrel at 700 feet above sea level. I tried up to 49 gr of 200MR with no pressure signs (about 2800fps).

Jimlaw83, how far away was your chronograph? Those are incredible speeds for a 24" tube.

To what speed do you load your SMK 175 grain, in 308? </div></div>

20" Rem Tactical = 2550
26" Rem Varmint = 2650
24" FN SPR = ~2625 from memory
26" Winchester Stealth = 2650 This one can be pushed faster, I just dont...
21.75" rock creek barrel = 2690

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

I'm going to my dads farm weekend after next and will verify the velocity matches 1k drop. To all who have read, seriously try this 2000 mr, it is really rocking the heavy bullets.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

22" Rock Bbl.
175gr. SMK
44gr. R-15
M210 primer
2,656 fps.

LOBO 151

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

22-inch barrel, FC or USGI brass with about 55.1 gr water capacity.

42.5 4064, CCI primers

2585 to 2630 fps, depending on the day, the case, and the temp. I expect cases to make less difference after I anneal them. All are on 3rd or 4th firing.

QuickLOAD says I can get to 2650 and still barely be inside my port pressure specs, but I don't see a need and I live in hot country. Other powders could go faster but the pressure curve tops out my port pressure spec at no faster than 2675, but with some impressively mild predicted chamber pressures.

AFIC, if the load is not within specs at 110°F, it's not truly a "safe" load even though you'd be hard pressed to get a case failure and would never lose a locking lug or stretch rifle headspace with the most common "cold weather" loads reported here on the Hide.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

26" factory Remington 700 VLS barrel, FGMM brass, WLR primer, H4895, 178 Amax, 2680fps.

Very happy on the ladder and groupings with no pressure signs in 95F weather. Seated to AICS mag length. Actual dope agrees with the chronographed 2680fps velocity.

Velocities with 175SMKs were almost identical but the 178Amax was more accurate.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

I run a 18.5'' Bartlein on M700 action.
175 Nosler CC, Lapua Brass, Varget and 210 Primers.
I get 2650 out of it at 400 ASL.
I've never chroned it at elevation, but at 4500ASL it takes 40.75 MOA to get 1100 yds.

I don't know how many grains of Varget I'm using. I think it's 44, but I don't have my reloading book with me.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

LC match brass
CCI 200
Varget 42.8
COAL 2.805
178AMAX

Primers are a little flat but no other pressure signs. This load duplicates 7.62 (not 308) FGMM 175 so I assume it is the same as M118LR.

Steyr SBS tactical 23.6" barrel (moly in the bore)
Mean 2569.2, SD 7.36

Noveske 18" N6 (no moly)
Mean 2460.8, SD 12.44

Rem 700 SPS tac 20" (no moly)
Mean 2480.4, SD 15.68

All rifle that I have tried this load through shoot sub MOA. I've gotten some 3-shot one hole groups at 200 yards with the Steyr, and 4-shot 5/8" at 200 with the SPS.

Leupold's M3 dial is calibrated for 175SMK @ 2550fps, so this load makes a lot of sense. There's another node at 44gr but it's pretty hot.

Another guy here uses 42.5gr and COAL 2.785 with same results.

Same experience here.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

My 20" rem is around 2500-2550, my 18" 2450-2500 and my 16" 2450. I don't load for velocity though I just make an accurate load and stick with it. Those are the velocity ranges I usually find my loads in.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

I shot some Amax but couldn't get the grouping to match the SMKs. Anyone have a specific DFL with those? I tried .005 and .010 from lands and just couldn't get anything under about an inch, when my accuracy load with the SMKs is between .35-.5 inch.

Try COAL at SAAMI 2.810 or less.

Re: What speeds do you reload your 175 grain 308?

I have found w/ the 175 mine come in around 2580-2630 as well out of a 26".
