What the heck did she buy me???

OK guys...I need some help here. My wife just gave my Christmas present and I was happy as hell to see it was a brand new rifle. That's when the confusion set in.

These are the facts:
-Box reads "Model 700 SPS Varmint, 20" Barrel FLTD 308 WIN 1 in 10" Twist, Beavertail stock with super cell pad"
-Gun reads "Model 700, 308 WIN 1 in 10" LT Tactical

I can't find this gun anywhere on the website. It has the same stock as the varmint but the barrel is 20", not 26". I googled it and found the only place on the web that has it is Lew Horton's site at the following: http://www.lewhorton.com/rem700lttactical.html

Any idea what I have?!?

I know some of the sps tacos shipped with the varmint stock for a while but they weren't fluted or 1/10.


Either sounds like you need to call manners or McMillan and start shooting it

If your barrel is fluted it's a Light Tactical. If it's in the stock that is pictured in the link then it's in a varmint stock. I would suggest go out and shoot it, once you see the groups I doubt you'll care about what the label is. The shorter fluted barrel with the tighter twist is a great buy. Let us know it shoots

My dealer has one of these,he said it was something remington put out for an economical tactical,not sure about the 1-10 twist but they put an LTR barred action in the sps stock,he has his listed for $679

Just an FYI, it is exactly as pictured in the link.

Any advice on the stock and optic?

Nightforce and an AICS. If you can get a good deal on a McMillan I'd roll that with Badger Bottom metal.

On the more affordable spectrum check out the Mil/Mil Bushnell or the Mil/Mil Super Sniper. You can get a lot done with a fixed 10x and a .308 Win.

If that's the exact gun that you have, then it's a special edition made for Lew Horton. Give them a call or email them for more info. Not everything that Remington produces is on their website or in their cataloges. I had an uncataloged 700P with a 26" barrel with the LTR flutes, item # 26181, marked specail edtion on the box.

Vortex Viper... Viper - 6.5 x 20 A very good scope in that price range.

I seen this model at a local dealer, looked like a nice rifle. Dealer wanted $750 for it on sale. Thought he was smoking a little something something, because he was high high!

+1 I put a viper 6.5x20-44 on my new remington 700 vssf in 308 and couldn't be happier with it. I paid $400 for it locally.

What a great Christmas present. For the sub $600 dollar scope I went with a Super Sniper 3-9x42 and couldn't be happier. With the $50 dollar snipershide promo code it comes to $550. Great scope for the money. As for the stock, if you decide you're willing to pay for an AICS 2.0 then shoot me a PM.

You guys are right...awesome wife!

I just got a response from Remington and it turns out the rifle is from a limited special run for Lew Horton that started as the SPS Varmint but they barreled it with the shorter 20", fluted barrel and the special twist rate of 10/1.

I am on the hunt for a stock though. I do like the idea of a take off. Anybody have one they want to part with?

I got a take off of a 5R that I'm going to part with but its a LA so no good to you. But it's a great stock if you find a SA one.

My approach is pretty simple. It seldom pays to look a gifthorse in the teeth.

Whatever you have it's probably going to shoot pretty well. Concentrate on loads and load development if you handload.

The time when model specifics become important is when parts are going to get changed. If that ever comes about, call Remington with the serial number and get the facts straight from the horse's mouth. Until then, I don't see the point in bothering.

Lucky man. I can't picture my wife ever buying a rifle for me.

In that price range a Sightron S3 or S2 Big Sky might be a good choice. Depends if you want SFP or FFP and mil/mil or not.

Look at the new Leupold VX-R, they are 30mm main tube VX-2's with better lighted reticles.

And does your wife have any sisters for the single guys on here?

That's a really cool little rifle, I've never heard of that one. I've been looking at either a LTR or a SPS T in .223 for plinking... I think I found a good in the middle match!
