Last night I was talking to some friends of mine here in Australia. The National Australia firearms groups are working on litigation to sue the Australian Federal Police (their FBI/DEA/BATF and so on) into allowing the use of silencers without the BS we have to go through in the US.

In New Zealand and in the UK and a lot of Europe silencers are a non-controlled item.

So why in the Home of the Brave and the Land of the Free are we paying our government money to have an item that benefits us by keeping our rifles from damaging our ears?

They are leagal here. The only thing that TRULY sucks is the long wait you have to go through. I don't think they're ever going to get rid of the $200 / transfer cash cow.

Here is a link to a thread where the problem is brought to light. I don't think the petitions are still active but you'll need to read up. Griffin Armament had a petition to sign as well.

I assume you are talking about doing a home made supressor. it's pretty simple.

Fill out your form 1 (if i am not mistaken, i'll verify today for you), send in the form to ATF with your desired serial number, and of course the $200 cash cow.

one you receive your stamp back from ATF, then and ONLY then can you proceed to manufacture your new home built suppressor. If you begin before the approval comes back it's just not going to end well, so don't do it.

As a side note, you cannot have ANY extra parts left over from the build of the suppressor, so cut or use exactly what you need. Having extra parts implies "intent" in the mind of ATF, and that intent is to manufacture additional suppressors without paying the tax stamp...

Ah that is regulation, not an illegal or legal thing. If that were the case then every gun would be illegal as every gun you buy you have to do paper work and pass a background check. Also the $200 tax and the $200 to the BATF is one in the same.
