Okay, Here is my dilemma.... I have wanted a 338 Lapua for a loooonnngg time, well I have been saving up and have the money to buy one now. If you could buy one what would it be? I have also been wondering if a bolt action rifle or a semi auto rifle would be better "obviously a bolt gun will be more accurate" But I saw the Bad News 338 lapua and wanted to know if anyone has heard anything about it and its accuracy. Thanks for the help!!!

Re: What would you do?

First determine what kind of range you have available. If not 1500+ you are buying a toy that is for giggles. If that's the case, then it doesn't matter either way.

The semi is going to be hard on brass if you plan to load. Bolts are most always more accurate if you're serious long-range shooter. If not, your $5 bill shooter can be either. Finally, there are really three options for a shooter: custom bolt action, Sako TRG, or AI (AX or AWSM). There are a few serious others starting to make it to the market like the Barrett and MSR. If you're looking at it like a "just because toy" and not pushing the limits, then you could throw Savage and Rem 700Ps into the mix.

My pleasure.

My plan was the 338 Hospitaller or the ThunderRanch GAP on the templar action in 300 Win mag (Left hand).

Have the Nightforce FFP and badger rings already picked out.

Sigh . . . . .

The truck is more practical.

Re: What would you do?

As far as factory rifles go, I would be looking at the the AI AW/AX and Sako TRG, as well as the DTA SRS. If a custom, then I'd start with a Surgeon XL action and any of the reputable barrel makers out there (my pick would be either Bartlein or Krieger in an MTU/AMU contour somewhere between 24-26" with a Badger FTE brake on the end), and whatever stock/chassis floats your boat.

And don't forget that a good scope is just as important as the rifle itself.

Re: What would you do?

Keep your eyes Peeled on the for sell section. Those been coming up a lot lately. With the crappy economy these days, not a lot of people can afford to shoot/own a .338 LM. And don't let the Savage/Remington name fool you. They can still make some VERY Accurate Rifles! It all depends on your taste/funds though.

I personally would definitely get it in a Bolt Action though. If you want a Big Power Semi then get the Barret .50 BMG! LOL

Good Luck and happy hunting!

Re: What would you do?

I thought about the Lapua and I decided to go a different route. I built a 338 Edge.

I don't know if you reload or not, but the cost of shooting the rifle is what was the determining factor. I just didn't want to shell out the money for the Lapua brass.

If I had to do it over again I might just run a 338 RUM. The gains by going to an Edge or Lapua are minimal.....especially if you want to run a little shorter barrel length.

Mine is 31" with the brake and it is definitely barrel heavy. I get a little stringing on my groups because of this.

Just a thought...

GA Precision built this one for me three years ago. It has a Surgeon XL action, 28" Barlein barrel with a Badger FTE brake.
