Ok boys,
After a good cheap hack bolt action rifle. Something to blast heaps of rounds through for practice without having to worry too much about wearing out an expensive barrel.

Dosn't have to be super accurate but needs to be reliable and able to handle constant use from lots of practice. Thinking .308 in some form but can be in another calibre, not fussed.

Any ideas?

The best thing you can use for target practice and to hone the basic skills would be to use a .22LR. I use a 22LR out to 100 yards to make sure I have all the basic skills down before I go out and spent $1500+ on the setup I want

Potato Guns are relatively inexpensive to fire.

Re: Whats a good cheap hack rifle.

Barrels aren't that expensive if you pick a caliber with a long barrel life. Ammo is by far more expensive. For that reason if you are worried about money, pick up a 22lr, I shoot mine out to about 300 yards on calm days, or a 223 and a basic reloading kit.

Re: Whats a good cheap hack rifle.

The Savage Edge and Mossberg 4X4 are "cheap" compared to other bolt rifles. But if the concern is barrel life; get a Remington 700 or Savage 10/110 series chambered in a cartridge that's not a barrel burner (.308 Win is a good choice). When your barrel is eventually shot out, you can rebarrel either of those and have a damn nice rifle. Cheaper models like the Edge and 4X4 don't have the aftermarket stocks, triggers and other options you may be interested in if you get into the sport. Stick with a basic 700 or 10/110.

. . . or just get a .22LR

Re: Whats a good cheap hack rifle.

I can't dispute a good .22LR RF - inexpensive and cheap to shoot.

You want a cheap "hack" .30 cal?

Don't know if you can get surplus "down under", but a Mosin Nagant can be had for < $100 and shoots cheap 7.62x54R.

Re: Whats a good cheap hack rifle.

I gotta go along with the 22 rifle, and maybe something similar to the Remington PSS, or Savage equivalent.

The 22 will give you all the training in basics of sight alignment, trigger pull, use of positions, breathing, for a very cheap price.

Ned Roberts (257 Roberts) used to have an excellent training program, but I can't recall exactly what it was right now. It was something like practicing offhand at 50 yards until you could hit a 3 inch circle every time. Then work your way out to 100 yards and do the same thing...no small feat. Only after someone could successfully show him they could pass his test would Roberts consider them a good shot.

I wish I remembered what it was, but I was damn impressed that they were able to do that with the firearms available back then. Some damn fine marksmanship. The point though, it that it is the practice you can get with a 22 that will make you similarly able to do pretty much the same thing with a centerfire rifle.

Re: Whats a good cheap hack rifle.

A savage of any sorts. They shoot great, are relatively cheap and are good to practice with. Hell I have been shooting F-class with mine and a bunch of other long range and it does a lot better than some more expensive stuff on the line. Trigger time is key, get some, get some often, and you will improve.

Re: Whats a good cheap hack rifle.

I guess my question would be what are you going to be practicing so much of if accuracy doesn't matter? If accuracy is bad, how are you going to know where you have flaws to work upon? If you just need a gun to go "bang".. I say .22 as well.
