What's a Good Factory Action

I'm doing research for a budget custom build in the 6.5 cal. and I am looking at building it on a long action platform. Any suggestions on what would be a good factory action to start with? This rifle will be used mostly for hunting Mulies. I am open to other calibers with very low recoil and with ballistics close to the 6.5's. I more than likely won't be shooting game out past 600 yards. I wouldn't mind building a 260 on the long action platform. I want an action that I will be able to find after market parts for easily. Is the Remington M1903 a good platform? Thank you for any help!!!

Re: What's a Good Factory Action

With a Savage action you can swap barrels in your basement with a small investment in tools. With a R700 you need to take it to a gunsmith. Either way aftermarket support is more than adequate. You can often find used Stevens(cheap Savage) for $250 or so, just stay away from.the Axis/Edge as it uses a different action.

Re: What's a Good Factory Action

Savage, Winchester/FN, Remington, Tikka will all perform if barreled properly. How/Weatherby Vanguard (same action) are popular overseas. I have owned both Howa & Weatherby Vanguard and the action was strong, smooth and the rifles were very accurate.

Re: What's a Good Factory Action

Tikka T3 and stick to the original barrel it comes with.
Best budget suggestion so far as it will give you exceptional accuracy and a fairly low price.
You also have the choise betwen 260 and 6,5x55.

My 6,5x55 with orignal barrel shoots constantly within 1/2 moa and likely also within a 1/4moa.

T3 does also have integrated rail a feature not many other manufaturers offers, and when they do, it costs a lot.

I can affirm that statement with 400+ rounds of experience. I have a Tikka T3 (that I bought in order to go prong horn hunting) and the action moves on its own. If you tilt the gun even at a small angle, the bolt will literally slide back and forth. I am, however, about to put in an order on an M40A5, which has a Remington 700 action, so if you're still in the market in 6-8 months, I'll be sure to let you know which action I think is superior.

Re: What's a Good Factory Action

Thanks!! I have a Savage 12 LRP 260 that am selling because I need the cash and figured that later in the year I would start over from scratch. Don't want to give it away so I may end up just keeping it.

What I like about the Rem 700 is that it is just so easy to customize later on as you get money ... easy to drop into chassis systems, get bolt knob upgrades, etc. Wealth of knowledge about them.

It's not just that they're smooth. Fast too. 75* lift.

The Finn's make Lapua brass and Scenar bullets. Both have a phenomenal reputation for quality. The Tikka is the same. This is their low-end, budget hunting rifle, but the actions are light, true out of the box and very rigid. The almighty Rem 700 action by comparison appears to have been built by Troglodytes. They're flimsy and require a lot of work to make them really accurate and repeatable. The only downside to the Tikka action that I can see is the recoil lug in light, heavy recoiling calibers, but this can easily be overcome.

Tikka's shoot very well out of the box, but will really shine with a decent match barrel screwed on without any action work. And now, a variety of manufacturers are making aftermarket parts for them. I have a custom .260 built on a the Lite action and I can't think of a part I'm wanting for.

I don't think there is a better action out of the box than Tikka.

Another action you might look at that is starting to get more attention and aftermarket support is the Howa.

Re: What's a Good Factory Action

Thanks for the great info. I'm going to do some research on the Howa actions. If I end up keeping this Savage, do you have any suggestions on how I can polish up the action and bolt to get it to operate smoother?

Re: What's a Good Factory Action

Buy a TRG-22 in .260rem and you will be set for life...
The TRG-22/42 action is the finest production action, plus you get superb stock and trigger, and 10rd magazine.

Other option would be FN-H SPR and have gunsmith do your 6.5mm switchbarrel, but the match chrome-lined barrel is worth accepting the .308win round as it will last forever.

Might find a Win 70 Sharpshooter in this same price category.

Best value would be used SPR for around $1200

Re: What's a Good Factory Action

I did a lot of reading before I bought my Remington. Can add many custom parts to it, many of the top percision rifles are based on the Remington 700 platform, and it's pretty durable.
