Whats a good length barrel for 6.5 creedmoor

I am replacing a barrel on a rem 700 in 308 with a 6.5 creedmoor barrel and wanted to know what a good length would be in order to get optimum velocity.


I'll mostly be shooting hornady 140 amax factory ammo for now.

mostly be for target shooting out to 800 - 1000, maybe competition at some point.

22" would be my choice. Couple members on here have good results in their .260 running 139-142's with 22" barrels. I'm not sure as to what estimate velocity wise because i don't know what velocity hornadys claims they're running at.

I have to agree with the others on 26". The only con is a the weight but for the type of shooting you are describing the 26" barrel would justify the extra few pounds.

As you said in your original posting velocity is the primary goal and the longer the barrel the more velocity. I am getting 2830 fps with my 6.5cm. It has a 26" fluted Kreiger barrel with a 8 twist. I am loading 42.5gr of RE 17 in hornady brass with CCI BR2 primers and topped off with 139 scenars moly coated. Make sure you go with an 8 or 8.5 twist. Enjoy, they are a blast.

I ran a 30" but it was mainly a bench/prone gun. I'd give another +1 for 26" for what you want to do.

I went 24" and wish I had gone with 26".

I'm building mine @ 21 or 22. You'll give up about a mill in elevation but only 2-3 tenths in wind.

26" would be my recommendation. I run a 28" now but it's back at GAP getting set back so it will be about a 26" when I get it back. Don't feel like I will be missing much as my team mate runs a 26" and his velocity was only about 15-20fps less than mine.

26" is great, and 24" is shortest I would go.

26" at a minimum: Unfortunately the Creedmoor gets anemic in a gas gun or a short barrel.

I have one being put together now at GAP and was going with a 24", now wondering if I should go longer??
