Hey folks, I'm new to the community so please bare with me. I'm in the process of putting together a reasonably light custom gun for hunting capable of responsible long range shots. That said, I'm looking for some advice on a quality scope to put on it. The caliber is 300 RUM. Thanks.

Bullstool,

Having a problem with some of the terminology you used:

"what's the best", "reasonably light", "responsible long range shooting out to 800 yds", and "300 RUM"; does not compute: nor do they co-habit well in the same post.

That said:

What's your budget?
Do you want to be able to dial range or are you planning on using reticle holds?
Do you want parallax adjustment?
Are you planning on using a LRF to determine range?
Will you be using drop charts?
How much experience do you have in shooting anything out to 800 YDS?
Do you need a illuminated reticle or large objective lenses for low light shooting?
Eye relief desired?

Leaving out other questions such as, FFP or SFP; MIL/MIL, MOA/MOA, MIL/MOA, BDC's dials or reticles, all of the above, none of the above, et al: as you can see, the more detailed and informative your post is, the better answers you will get.

Semi intelligent and less than useful answers are actually available for free here.

Quality answers that actually might fit: your needs, desires, skills and budget, require slighty more imput from you.

Thanks for asking,

Bob
