So I've almost got my rifle complete and as I near the time when I'm going to put some serious range time behind it and start trying to work up some good hand loads I'm looking to narrow down my starting point. I have a R700 AAC-SD in .308. For those who have the same, what have you found to be your most accurate loads? Powder type and measure, bullet weight, etc???

Thanks in advance.

Keep in mind one members' "pet" load will not necessariarly be yours. I found many recipies here on SH to be very close, yet further experimentation +/- charges got me closer. There is just too many variables to take internet loads as law. Load, test, document. I've shot over 40 different combinations in .308 alone and still not satisfied that i've done as much as I can. I actually enjoy testing loads. It's a great stress reliever ! :p

Since nobody else helped you out I will. I am sure there is a ton of threads on this in the reloading section but I'll post anyway.

155 gr sierra match king

175 gr Sierra Match King
44 gr Varget

Winchester Brass
Tula Large rifle magnum primer

185 gr berger long rang boat tail
44 gr varget
2.84 OAL
winchester brass
Tula Large rifle magnum primer

168gr Nosler CC
43.6gr Varget
2.810 OAL
Lapua brass w/ Fed 210 primer

and my whammy shells are:
175gr SMK
45.6gr Varget (OVER MAX BOOK LOAD DO NOT START WITH THIS CHARGE!)
2.910" OAL
Lapua brass w/ Fed 210 primer

My money load:

175 SMK
44.5gr Varget
Norma or Federal GMM Brass
Winchester LR or Federal 210M primer
2.830" OAL

I haven't been able to see an accuracy difference between the Norma and Federal brass, although the Norma brass lasts a lot longer. I do however, feel like the WLR primers have a slight accuracy/consistency edge.

My 22" 308 DTA 1:11.5 twist loves IMR 4064 42.8gr. with 168gr. COAL 2.89. IMR 4064 43.9gr with 185gr. Berger VDLS with COAL 2.89. Good Luck!

The 168g bullets and 4064 are a classic loading. How does the 4064 work in the heat? Heard much ado about temp sensitivity. Be good to get the straight scoop from someone who has firsthand experience.

Have not noticed much temp sensitivity, but do try to keep the bullets shaded as much as possible while shooting. Found very little difference here in AZ compared to Varget and much easier powder to find. For my 260 I use H4831 at 45.7gr. with Berger 140gr. VDL bullets, since H4350 almost non existent. Have some IMR 4350 I was going to try, but the H4831 has worked so well and I have 24lbs of it. Chronoed this load today at 2870 fps with SD of 12 fps in 95 degree heat!!! I haven't messed with the IMR 4350 yet. 260 Rem is by far my favorite LR caliber. Probably try that this Fall.

PS-Love TN. Went to college at Vanderbilt back in the 60's.
