Hey guys, im new to the long distance shooting, i have been snooping around for a while. my question is, are there any good websites that break everything down to beginer terms? how to correctly zero a scope..how the length of the barrel affects the distance/ accuracy... is there a things as to long of a barrel? just stupid stuff like that i want to have down befor i go shooting, i know the basic rules of shooting an M16 that i was tought by the military, but that doesnt exceed more tha 2-300 yrd. any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Where to learn

This is the right sight for all of your questions. You would be hard pressed to find an unanswered "fundamentals/beginner" question here. Spend some time with the SH search engine.
Excluding dot-drills, 200-300 yard shooting is boring. Long range hits are much more rewarding.
I hope your bank account and marriage can handle your new long range hobby. Lol

Re: Where to learn

well the great thing is,, im not married,, and im currently deployed so i have some extra cash laying around ontop of what i planed on saving i plan on starting off at 100/200 yards,,, and then 300 yards and moving up to 1000.. figured if i buy a top notch gun now,, in a few years, it will still be top notch if i take care of it. thanks for the sites you guys posted, i will be sure to check them out!

If that ever changes you are guaranteed to go through a spending "recession", lol.

I was in the same boat as you a few years ago. Nine months of unspent deployment cash burning a hole in my pocket. I spent a few months searching SH and learning about custom builds and glass before I took the plunge.

Stay safe out there. God bless.

Re: Where to learn

ha, yes EVENTUALLY i will take a spending cut from ammo and guns, but they will know that i will not sell or get rid of my guns. unless i fall on hard times. family is the most important thing to me, and if it comes down to having to get rid of the guns or not feeding or caring properly for my kids, you bet your ass id give them up, but hopefully that doesnt happen,

and thanks, ill stay as safe as i can, almost done, so hopefully i can get shooting soon!

Re: Where to learn

Another thing after you use the search engine and read all the great threads on getting started in long range shooting is to find a range near you that the shooters are shooting at long distances.

You'll learn more in an afternoon watching and chatting with the shooters that are hitting targets out 1000 yards and beyond instead of the ones that hang out at the local gun shop and talk about how they can do it.

Most shooters will take the time to help someone new getting started especially if they are willing to listen. There are a lot of good threads and very good shooters on this site that can share a wealth of information.

Good luck, hope you find the road you'll travel challenging but always keep in mind for most of us it's supposed to be fun and a way to test ourselves. Don't get frustrated, you'll have days you'll want to brag about and others you hope no one was watching.

You didn't say what part of the Country you will be returning to but if it's in Ohio you're more than welcome to join us for a fun practice day. I'm far from an expert but the group I shoot with would be more than glad to help you start your journey.

Almost forgot...... THANK YOU for your service to our Country.
