Which 308 bullets work well with a long jump

Since I just found out that my 700p has the world longest throat (longer than 3" coal to make contact) and my internal mag is stock, I need bullets that are known to work very well with tons of jump. So far the best accuracy bullets for my rifle are 168 smks but they're not the greatest bullets for long range.

Anyone have any suggestions for bullets that like jump?

Re: Which 308 bullets work well with a long jump

match kings work best with a long jump because of the shape of the bullet.... amax can jump long but, in my own experience with amax, they jump but, not like the smk. The amax shape is very different than the smk.

Basically, there are two types of bullet contours and the amax is one type ( I forget the names of them ) and the smk is the other. You're looking for the smk type contour for a long jump. The other type is very seating depth sensitive.

If you want to jump a bullet, I'd go with the match king. I don't know the contour of the hornady HPBT, however and, I love hornady bullets.

Re: Which 308 bullets work well with a long jump

I've yet to find a load my long throated 700 shoots 155 or 168 SMKs really well with, but I gave up quickly, it was easy with the Hornady 178 BTHP, and the 168 Amax, haven't tried the 178 Amax, they're rarely in stock.

Re: Which 308 bullets work well with a long jump

My current load is using the Hornady 178 bthp. After load development it does pretty well in my rifle (hovering over half MOA) but I havn't been able to get it into the sub half MOA that I get from my 168 SMK load. Starting to tweak the COAL was what lead me to check the throat length. Maybe I can get it to settle in with a longer COAL, but I wanted an idea of a backup bullet option if I wasn't happy with my results.

In my 10 twist, I shoot the Berger 185 LRBT's. The bullets measure 1.363" and I have jumped them from .005 to .040 with good success. I settled on .008 as that is where I was getting my best ES/SD's.

Yeah, the rifling starts half way down the barrel on the Remingtons.

I've had good luck with the 168 Matchkings. I recently got some Berger 168 hybrids but haven't shot them yet. They look like they will shoot good and are a good bit longer than the Matchkings.

With the 178 Amax in my AAC-SD, to the lands is 2.342 ogive. I seated all these to where they would feed in my AICS mag which ended up being 2.238 ogive.

That is a .104 jump. Groups fired at 300 yards.

155AMAXs shoot like this at 2.850" oal.

178HPBTs, 2.850" oal.

168AMAXs, 2.850"

BTW, in my 700SPSS the 178s kiss the lands at 2.950", yours should be the same.

That would be a Tangent ogive for the MKs, Secant ogive for the Hornadys.

Re: Which 308 bullets work well with a long jump

tanget ogive bullets jump better than secant ogives bullets
due to there profiles

most SMK, Nosler ballistic tips and Berger BT are tangent ogive
Berger VLD, Amaxs, Vmaxs and some lapua scenars are secant ogive

according to bryan litz

Re: Which 308 bullets work well with a long jump

I have a 700 VSSF in 308 with the same malady-short magazine long throat. I wouldn't worry about the jump to the lands, as I have had great results with 168 MK, Custom Competion, and Amaxes, 155 Custom Competition, and am currently shooting 178 amaxes ahead of varget with 210's, and they're doing pretty well too. Lots of good load data in the reloading section, but my go to powder has been Varget.

Re: Which 308 bullets work well with a long jump

My 700P shoots the shit out of the 178 gr A-Max.

I have them loaded right under factory magazine length, 2.825".

With 45.6 gr RE-15, Hornady brass, and CCI BR2's I can easily shoot under 1/2" and closer to 1/3".

I recently tried working up a load with the 180 gr Accubond and it wouldn't hold a group I was happy with. I might try again with a slower burning powder in the future.

Hope this helps.
