Everyone knows the .270 is the most popular sniper rifle in the world. Plus is has killed more zombies than anyother. How could even question it against anything else. I use it everytime I play Sniper on my x-box, I have never lost.

You will learn very very quickly that the word "sniper" is only used for one purpose, to reference those that are actual snipers in the military or LE. It's not a sniper rifle unless the person shooting it is a sniper, know what I mean?
To answer your question though: either one will work fine beyond 1,000 yards the question is can you shoot that far? If you don't have the experience to shoot accurately that far start with a .308. For scopes whatever scope you can see your target with will work just fine. More important than magnification is clarity and how reliablely your turrets track and that it returns to zero each time. A little elabaoration on the distances you plan to shoot and the animals you intend to hunt will help to get the anwsers you want. Be safe and know your limits.

Deer my ass, I dont think there is enough power there so I wouldnt suggest them for anything over rabbit hunting. And you gotta keep em close cause niether rifle will go past 300 yards before bullets start tumbling.
BTW big fail on that assumption in red, there are some really nice LR 270 rigs out there. Will it ever be adopted by a military? prolly not but it has potential.

Just get a 308, ammo is readily available, cheap, and easy to reload. You can always rebarrel if you want.
Get a 10x40 super sniper scope and shoot alot.
Once you understand, and get comfortable with the rifle get some instruction.

First, welcome to The 'Hide, and please excuse our occasional lapses into over-enthusiasm.
The .270 is a fine hunting caliber, and initial US Sniper firearms used another fine hunting caliber, the .30-'06; which doubled as our Nation's front line military chambering for the better part of the 20th century. Of the two you suggest, I would prefer the .30-'06. For hunting, I favor the .280; but I'm a Neanderthal. For some reason, Walmart never seems to run out of .270 hunting ammo, and they don't even carry .280.
While both are not bad, there are better chamberings, including .308 and .260.
Coming to a nominally 'Sniper' site and asking which is the best Sniper chambering as your very first post betrays a certain degree on 'new-guy-ness'.
OK, so it's <span style="font-style: italic">not</span> a hanging offense. It's still kinda naive.
Ask your questions. Some of us will try to answer them with at least a moderate effort to be helpful.

The best advice i can give you is learn your rifle and your ballistics once you can do that accordingly then you should be able to shoot well with any reasonable cartridge and its not the rifle or the cartridge its the shooter....

The .30'06 was sending souls into the nether in Germany and the South Pacific long before Americans took note of that little Asian backwater country.
The .30'06 was used by US Snipers in the form of the 1903 Springfield with a variety of scopes, then the M1 Garand with a side mounted optic and a interesting cheek pad.
However the term "Sniper Rifle" is so over used and mis-used that it becomes like nails on a chalkboard. I almost got irritated when I called my FFL to tell him my AI would be arriving. He said "that's a Sniper Rifle....right?" Then I realized.....it is.
So if I had a AWM rechambered for .30'06 or .270, would it still be a "Sniper Rifle"?

Actually, I think this isn't a bad suggestion if he is completely new to rifle shooting. But unfortunately it is overlooked. Working on trigger control, shooting positions, and form, etc on a 22LR goes a long way.

Of the two I would get the 30-06.
You have the same great selection of bullets as the .308 winchester for reloading. It will do everything the .308 will do with the same bullets and do it a little faster and flatter though with a little more recoil. Ammo is about the same price wise as the .308 around here and as easy or easier to find.

The '06 would be the better of the two, especially until you get up and running with handoading. When you do, the .260 rem would be my first suggestion, followed by the .280.
If you genuinely plan to become adept at more precise marksmanship, you'd be well advised to include a basic, rugged, and reliable .22LR bolt repeater, I recommend the Savage MKIIF.
The term 'Sniper' is used to describe a military or law enforcement professional, all others making claim to the title are likely posers. A Sniper Rifle is a rifle used by a legitimate Sniper. All others shoot (I would hope, anyway) precision rifles.
You gotta get this nomenclature thing right before you go any further here.
BTW, I am not, never was, and likely (I would hope, anyway) never be, a Sniper. Nothing wrong with it, but I <span style="font-style: italic">know</span> it's not me...

If you are actually serious about shooting which I have my doubts. Get yourself a .308 and some really cheap ammo and shoot every chance you get. If you practice enough to shoot that decent, go get some match ammo shoot it even more when you run out of funds buy a reloading press start rolling your own. After several thousand rounds you might have some understanding of whats going on. I have several calibers from big to small, tacticool to varmint and everywhere in between, and I shoot my .308 10 to 1. I can do anything with it that anyone can do with anyother caliber this side of 1000 period.

On the other hand you can push the -06 close to 300 Win Mag ballistics with alot better barrel life.
You can't do that with a .308

I think we need to examine the expansion ratio where case capacity and bore length approach overbore without actually arriving at that treshold. I think of this approach as being what I call an 'express' range. The .260 has it, the .280 has it, and the .30-'06 is at the lower edge of it.

Take a look at what a bolt action .308 can do with a 208 amax and RE17.
