So I have been thinking about these ballistic calculators but the thing is they are a bit costly and I do not want to get it wrong, and its not exactly something I need tomorrow. Right now I settled for a 29 dollar Caldwell wind meter. But it does not calculate ballistics. I have a Ruger RPR but I like Hornady bullets and ammo so would one of the dedicated units be best or should I save the bucks and get a generic unit. And if I get a generic unit would it be best to get a Kestrel or some other brand? I have a Caldwell chronograph so I can do velocity measurement.

If you have a smartphone there are several apps that are free, most are very low cost; $10-15 a few on the high end in the $30 range.

One of the better calculators is a website, several of the free and paid apps actually use their engine under the hood:

Strelok and BallsticsArc are two that have a feature limited free version to try.

If you like Hornady bullets you cant go wrong with the Hornady 4DOF Ballistic app. It's a free download from the app store and it has a lot of functionality built in. There are some add-on features for which you can make in app purchases for but the cost is only a couple of dollars extra if I remember correctly.

4DOF has been very accurate for me out to 1200 meters with a 6.5 Creedmoor RPR shooting Hornady's 140 ELD-M projectile.
