I will have my 18.5 inch 6.5X47 Lapua back from my 'smith in the next few weeks and am wondering if H4350 and RL17 are gonna be a tad slow for that short a barrel. I have H4895, RL15, Varget and TAC on hand in abundance as well as a pound each of H4350 and RL17 to play with. Should I start with Varget or the H4350? Anybody run 4895 in the x47? What says the hive? Gonna be running 123gr Scenars and/or AMAX's.

I think you should start with the RL15 and establish something of a baseline for both accurary and MV. RL15 is the well established go-to-powder for the 123 grainers out of the 47L. Once you have an idea what the rifle can do with RL15, give the H4350 a try, as that is another great 47L powder with a few benefits over RL15 (cleaner and less temp sensitivity). I personally don't like RL17 as it is too temp finicky for me, but others absolutely love it and I will not argue that it produces some great velocity w/o pressure issues, so I would go to RL17 after the H4350.

Varget's going to do well in that case with a shorter barrel. Without the barrel length to support a slower powder (like H4350) you will more than likely see equivalent or better speeds with Varget and RL15 than with the H4350. Varget is pretty temp stable compared to RL15.

Thanks for the comments folks. I have run the number in QL and I agree that Varget is the place to start. Just happen to have an 8-pounder sitting here so it is really starting to look good

Anybody shooting a X47 with that short a barrel? What loads are you using?

I wouldn't mess with a powder that has RL in it's name. I tested and tested with RL 15 and 17 in various cases and found the temperature stability to be terrible. Anyway, I would definitely run varget or 4350. Just as a starting point, my best loads out of my 26" barrel are 37.8 of varget and 42.0 of H4350. These loads was also right before I hit pressure.
