Well, now Im thinkin bout savin for a custom. Theres alot of them out there ranging in price. I know that I couldnt go wrong with an AI or one of the GA Precision Sticks. What I wanna know is if there are guns out there that will do you well for less $$$$. I know you gotta pay to play, but Im thinkin of guns like some of the higher end Rem 700, and the H&S Precision Rifles. Will they compete at that level? So If you guys wanna list the guns in either .308 or 300 Win Mag from they highest priced best performing to the moderately priced great performing. We'll say Top 5. If you come up with more thats great too.I would love a GA gun @ $4000 but would be perfectly happy with a rifle that competes at the tactical level (1000yds) for $2000-2500. Thanks for the input and look forward to seein what you come up with.

Re: Which Rifle ?

Remington PSS in .308, nice rings and bases. Good optics and start shooting. You can always build it up later if you take the GAP or other gunsmiths route.

Re: Which Rifle ?

About the PSS. Ive been told by a few guys that there was no difference between the PSS and the BDL VS other than the matte finish on the barrel of the PSS. I know the PSS is coming with the 26" now, but as I recall didnt they also come with the 24". I dont know if this is correct or not. I currently have a BDL VS 700 .308, H&S Precision Stock fully bedded, pillars, trigger job (less than 2lbs)24" heavy barrel 1 in 12. The biggest difference I was told was the $$$. They said they slapped a "P" on the BDLVS and charged around $1200 for it. Im by no means tryin to ruffle any feathers, I honestly dont know if this is true. So I guess that is my question to you.

Re: Which Rifle ?

I am bit by the .22 bug. If I had my druthers, I'd opt for a Stiller 25x repeater when they come out. I drained my savings that was intended for such a rifle on a 40x and am more than happy with the rifle so far. Great to shoot, nice and compact, challenging in the wind, and going through 100 rounds of match ammo today only cost me $10 instead of $100.
I may very well get that Stiller when it comes out just so I can have some variety. Here's to being single...

Now if I can't convince you to go .22, then I will at least say that the 5r is an awesome rifle out of the box. I didn't do a thing to mine and had no problems out to 1k other than my poor shooting skill. Those 4k guns are nice, but you better have another 4k for ammo when you buy it.

Re: Which Rifle ?

.22's are fun, thers no doubt bout that. A lot cheaper to shoot also. Ive gotta get me a good LR gun first though. Couple guys mentioned hoppin up a 700 P, but not sure if my 700 BDL VS could be a good LR gun if I put the same amount of $$$ into that.

What the $$$ for one of those? What Im lookin for is a gun that will do just fine against the GA or AI. If I dont have to spend $4000 on a gun when I can purchase on for a lot less that will compete just fine at that level.KNow what I mean? Keep postin guys its good info. Thanks

Re: Which Rifle ?

Here's a place to get a 5r - http://snipercountrypx.com/c-1343-model-700-series.aspx - it's where I got mine, owner is a great guy to deal with, he hooked me up big time in getting a package setup.
The price on the 5r has jumped a lot though and honestly now, I'd get the SPS tactical for around $590-600, it will likely shoot just as well, most people usually end up upgrading the stock from the 5r anyways, and you've got extra cash to burn on ammo that way.
My next .308 will probably be the SPS tactical, then when I save up enough I'll get it smithed a bit, but you don't need to do much to those guns to shoot decently.

Re: Which Rifle ?

Some of the best shooting I've ever witnessed at long range was with a totally stock PSS (.308) with a 10x super sniper on top. My money is on the driver, not the car... If i could do it all over again, i would have spent more time shooting and less time changing equipment around. Keep replacing barrels, learn your rifle, your load, your ability to read the conditions downrange accurately, and yourself.

I'm saving for a time machine, and a really, really realistic sex doll.

Re: Which Rifle ?

I have to agree with sosicmcise it's the shooter not the gun. I shoot matches and see factory guns shoot right up there with the highend customs alot. It's more about the nut behind the trigger than the gun the trigger is resting in.

Re: Which Rifle ?

I also think the 308 you have should be a good shooter. What kind of groups does it shoot? This may be a rifle to build with that money, or if it does shoot good maybe looking into getting a different caliber or set-up some you can shoot more than one gun per match. If your interrested in shooting matches if not please rethink this you can learn alot by shooting them and see how others run there weapon.

Re: Which Rifle ?

Dont spend $4000.00 on a rifle unless you have $4000.oo for ammo and accessories, ie; range finders, spotting scope, neat items from Triad...

I have a remingtom 700 sps with a ss10x42, badger M5, roedale brake, with 1250 or so rounds down her.

I have shot out to 1300 yards, but more common, about 800 to 900 yards.

besides wanting tp get a scope with more magnification, i have no regrets.

At 100 yards my groups with FGMM 168 is about 3/8"

Its almost silly to shoot at 100 yards, i cany really miss unless i am still hung over from the night before.

Get the remmy, throw a decent scope on it and buy a couple thousand rounds of ammo.

have fun!!

Re: Which Rifle ?

I'm having one built now, and it's going to come out in the $23-2500 range. Not the most expensive, but not the cheapest either. It'll be a Stiller Tac30 with a Broughton barrel and a MCM Winchester Marksman stock. It's not going to be anything exotic, but I think it'll work just fine. Then I also have an SPS-V with a 16x SS and a takeoff stock, it's no high dollar setup but shoots very well with FGMM and even better with handloads.

Re: Which Rifle ?

Thamks for the info guys. Ill spend that $$$ on the ammo. Just bout 8 lbs of Varget, 900 rds SMK 175 and 100 rds Barnes TSX 168 (Compliments of the Kalifornia Hippies). Ill leave the gun as is. Shoots great .270-.350 @ 100. When the stock barrel goes out Ill send it off to GA to true the action and slap a new barrel on it. Cant beat the $$$ for this gun. $300 @ a Gun store outa Gilette Wyoming 4 years ago. Dont think he new what he had.

Thanks again Sosicmise (Taylor) for bringin me back down to Earth.LOL Semper Fi Brother.
