Which sight for m4 afghanistan

Re: Which sight for m4 afghanistan

I changed batteries every mission on all my gear so it was never an issue for me, the NVGs ate batteries every night and was nothing to restock them with fresh ones in the Eo-tech. I later found that if you can get lithium AA for the EO-techs that they will last a very long time. We used to have similar issues with our M68s(super old ones) as I had the batteries go out on those quite often and even went to an Iraqi Camera store get some, as these at the time where really hard to find after the invasion. I found it harder to use the Aimpoints with NVGs than with the EO-tech. It seemed harder to get to a position where I could see the Aimpoint while helmet mounted.

Either way this kid is going to be issued a great optic

I would have rather run an aimpoint which was a model that could be co-witness.

Good luck,

Good point about the Aimpoint and batterys i like the sight but hate always checking batterys

Re: Which sight for m4 afghanistan

Next week I leave for my 9th "vacation" in the sandbox. I use the Aimpoint with 3x magnifier on a LaRue flip mount. With that said I can shoot the irons just as well however the magnifier does help with target ID.

You didn't have PEQ-2's or PAC-4's or some other IR laser targeting system?

Thank you and your family for your service and sacrifice.

Depended on the mission, I liked not to pack too much on the ole m4. Used the PAQ4 a long time ago. I used PEQ2 for Illumination and designator than the pinpoint laser; PEQ15/DBAL(towards end) last deployment. In the beginning of my deployments I always had one of them installed on the rifle with the airforce wire and such, and after a few weeks all the extras went, except I would keep the PEQ2 and surefire in a pouch and would mount it for night ops but more or less used the PEQ2 as a designator than for aiming. They also issued us the green lasers, gave them to the gunners.. It made life easier for me just to use the EO-tech..not saying it is the best but I just adapted to it and stuck with it and swaying away from it now is hard.

Re: Which sight for m4 afghanistan

11B? Ft Riley? Big Red One? Here's how it will go down. He'll be assigned to a mechanized unit (which will likely only have HMMWV's in Afganistan). Everyone there will be a cowboy with eighteen different attachments on their M4. He'll either be a driver or a dismount. If he is assigned an M4 or M16A4, he'll likely get an EOTech. Team leaders and above seem to have the ACOGs in mech units. If he is not assigned a rifle, he'll get a M249 SAW. The SAW is moderately heavy and the ammo is unwieldy but it is the shit in a firefight.

I will bet that his drill instructors told all the trainees that they better learn how to shoot with iron sights because they wouldn't get any optics at their units. You'll tell a private anything to get them to qualify!

My choice for two tours in Iraq was the TA31F ACOG. In Afganistan where contact is generally a bit further away I might lean toward a little more magnification but not more than 9x. 2-9x would be ideal; maybe a trijicon Accupoint? Above all else, it has got to be rugged. I could not even begin to tell you how many times I ate shit while running with all that gear on. My rifle always hit the ground as hard as I did.

Re: Which sight for m4 afghanistan

just because hes in an infantry unit. doesnt mean he will have everything he needs. is he deploying with his unit or is he going in the middle of a deployment. reason i ask is that our new dicks mid deployment normally show up with stripped m'4s or 16's then our unit gives them weapons when they get there. we are going again this summer, and we have about 3 or 4 peq 15's per squad, and most of our joes are rocking pvs 7's, we only have about 10-15 sets of pvs 14's per platoon. some of our guys have m16 a4s still. and we have about 6 acogs per platoon. everyone else has comp 2 aimpoints and we have a handful of comp 4's i guess it just depends how units spend money
