I am looking on Midway USA's site and see a few differant VAIS Brakes for 308. I have a Rem 700 .308 VTR with the heavy bbl and reading all the differant brake outside diameters and so forth I am confused. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
John

Re: Which Vais brake to order

In most cases when you purchase a Vais brake, you need to purchase it slightly over sized and you or your smith will turn it down to the same diameter as your barrel if possible or they will turn the rear of the brake to slope to your barrel diameter.

Re: Which Vais brake to order

If you shoot prone you want a closed bottom brake!

Yes SMACK the 300wm still has the Vias
- someday i will 5/8x24 thread it an put something else on (or another barrel)

You wont the standard #2 brake. They are .750 dia. so it will only need to be kissed to make it matte up to your profile. Look at Brownells website and they give the dia. of the different vais brakes, im not sure if midway does or not..

Re: Which Vais brake to order

The vias brakes can be turned down a bit to match up but you need to measure the barrel about 3/4" behind the crown as this is where the brake will mate to the outside diameter of the barrel, not at the muzzle. Then order the next size up. This is also a good time to have your smith recut the crown with a flat face while he has it in the lathe.
If you have any intention of shortening the barrel, then you will need to measure back where you want it cut to.
And while your smith is fitting the brake, have him make a thread protector for it so you can remove the brake when cleaning and not have to worry about smacking the threads with the brake off.
