What type of vice and/or fixtures do you use to hold a stock in your mill? I want to install flush cups on the bottom side and remove some material in the recoil lug area for bedding. My Wells Index has a 10"x48" table. Thanks

A couple paint sticks cut to length is all I used till this year when I found some good quality plywood scraps . It holds the stock well enough for cuts in the vise area when cutting further out a machinist jack holds it from dipping.

Yeah, common problem. Aside from inletting, opening up barrel channels is another challenging workholding task.
I'm drawing up something similar to what Graco uses here (I had called them about this, for installing their cheekrest hardware), if you FF to about 1:30 you can see a relatively simple fixture that can be clamped in the milling vise, instead of a plate affixed to the back of the stock, could just use another clamping arrangement like the forend.
