Whidden Bullet Pointing on 300gr SMK ?

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointing on 300gr SMK ?

Bullet pointing will raise the BC of a bullet. Many of prone long range shooters use them. I don't know if John makes the sleeves for the 338 class bullets. E-mail him to find out. I have used for 308, 6mm and 7mm With success. Regards Bill

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointing on 300gr SMK ?

There are a few of us using the pointing die here , for myself its been great for the 6mm and 30 cal but thats all I have used it on . My 338 lapua is out at Birdsong for coating and should be back in a few weeks .
Please post if there is any info on that 338 die

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointing on 300gr SMK ?

The question is will there be any accuracy gain from it. We all can agree that making ammo as consistent and uniform as possible is to our benefit....but...has anyone acually tested this at 1000+ yards for gains in accuracy?

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointing on 300gr SMK ?

I have not ,
I think there will be less drop but cannot say there more accurate? hopefully more consistant?

I've never used it on the 300 smk. I don't even know if JW makes one for the 338. But, I see nothing but improved accuracy THROUGH... CONSISTANCY of BC using the WBP ( saying all other variables are consistant...) for the 300 SMK at the LONGER ranges - 800+.

I've had real good luck with mine (6.5 & .30 cal)...

When you say "just the pointer", what are you referring to?

I think of the "pointer" as being the die I put in the press and point boolits.

There are 3 parts to the JW pointing setup - The die housing, the caliber sleeve, and the pointing insert.

You are right about the 338 parts not being listed, or maybe I just missed it too...

JW has went to a more boolit specific pointing insert, so the #? will depend on the pill you choose to run.

Im sure you could call him up and pick his brain....

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointing on 300gr SMK ?

I recently bought a 338 sleeve and a #2 die insert, as that was what John said I needed for the 300gr SMK.
The most noticeable results I have had was with the Berger 308 210gr LRBT in a 30/8mm Rem Mag. I use a MCR Meplat uniforming tool and a countersink to square the tip then countersink the tip, and then repoint with the Whidden tool.
On the 210 Berger's this process cut my vertical spread at 1000 yds in half, from just under 10" with out of the box bullets to just under 5" after reworking the tips. I can not say that there was a noticeable difference in the BC but with the increased accuracy I got with the 210's I now rework the tips on everything I shoot for competition and hunting.
My 338 project is not done yet but from the looks of the tips of the 300 gr SMK's I have, it will definitely help.

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointing on 300gr SMK ?

I know 2 pretty good shooters as well as reloaders that have messed with repointing their 300SMK's and both had better results loading them right out of the box instead of trying to repoint them.

There are some custom bullets out there that would probably be better money spent maybe.
