Someone on here was asking about difference in sound between a 5.56 fired through a .30 can vs. a 5.56 can and it was AAC cans in particular (but I'm sure this would apply to others as well).
I tested that out for 'ya but I've been busy and forgot to mention it. I have a couple SDN6's and 556SD's. Basically the same can in two different calibers, the 5.56 can is a tiny bit shorter compared to the .30 like most are. I'm assuming the internals are the same...
In all the years I never actually compared 'em side by side on purpose. I knew the .30 cans are deeper and throatier with 5.56 but that was it, and once I got the 556's I quit using the SDN6's on the 5.56 rifles.
Anyway, I was surprised to find that the smaller 556SD didn't just attenuate the sound to a higher pitch but it also reduced the overall noise significantly enough that it was obvious to two different people. So yeah, a one size fits all will work but a dedicated can for not only the caliber but also the application will always give better performance than not.
FWIW I get similar results between a TBAC Ultra 9 in 6.5 and a 30CB9 on a 6.5G but I always wrapped that difference up to being the difference between those two models, but perhaps it's not that simple.
