Whats the skinny on holsters??? I like leather but it seems Kydex is king in that venue? Seems comp-tac is favored?

I shoot a Kimber with a (fucking) rail, talk about trouble finding a kydex holster, it was a bitch, currently using a Fobus.
Hate the cost of .45, but love the feel/trigger on the Kimber.

I used to shoot IPSC with a f'n railed 1911. If you need a good holster for it check out Bladetech. Before I started shooting Limited the Bladetech did me good. If used for IDPA you may need a different set up on the back of the holster as the one I have has a "drop" to it. Ain't nothin like a nice 1911 trigger!

I still use a Milt Sparks IH, IWB. It's as fast as one can ever practice to become. Besides, the draw isn't where speed comes from anyway. I use it in comps because that's what I carry my 1911 in.

I don't shoot IDPA anymore, but I have used my Bladetech Kydex before.
Comp-tac's kydex holsters are nicer in my opinion but the Bladetech is very nice as well.
Leather sucks for competition...nothing beats kydex for IDPA.

I used a Galco Yaqui Slide leather. I have trouble finding holsters for mine because it has a squared off trigger guard.

You can also look for a custom holster. My 1911, a Double Star, also has rails and finding a holster, as anyone who has a 1911 with rails knows, was a bitch. So I custom ordered one from Pure Kustom and it rules. It's still a bit tight (I did get it less than a week ago), but the craftsmanship is superb as is the materials and customizability of Rocky's holsters. His "Black Ops Pro" holster has 18 IWB and 1 OWB position. His prices are reasonable, especially for an all handmade affair.
Check him out. Give him a call. If he doesn't already have a mold for your gun, he'll make one (he did for me). It was about 30 days between order and arrival.

RoninP80 is right on, 90% of all competative shooters will be sporting a kydex OWB rig. It will give probably give you a few 10ths advantage on the draw over an IWB type and the really competative shooters need/want that. Personally I switch back and forth between a Comp-Tac OWB and my Milt Sparks VMII (because that's what I carry in.)

Do you want to shoot IDPA with the gear that you will most the time carry? Or do you want to shoot solely for the competition? If thats the case then you might as well shoot USPSA. Since IDPA is "supposedly" set up to role play real world scenarios, then it seems your competition gear should be what your normal CC gear is. But then again, IDPA isn't really anything like real world scenarios.

If you are shooting IDPA use your CCW rig if you live in a place that will not let you carry than get a CCW rig that works for you. Since there may be a time that you may need to carry and you will be experenced with the rig.

Even if I dont agree with everything in IDPA, its a venue I can use for my own agenda, get out and shoot. Not sure I care if I win, I want to use it for practice under a bit of pressure. The only reason I cant say 100% I dont care about winning is because I'm highly competitive

Heres a question though, I built all my 1911's. 2 meet the criteria of std barrel etc etc but they are not production guns. Are they disqualified for being "customs"?

Custom Defensive Pistol is the class your pistol should fall in. (45acp only) I shoot a 1911 that's had some minor modifications. Barrel, ignition components including trigger, grip safety, thumb safety. etc. If you'll go to IDPA web site you'll find a listing for classes and rules.

Great! The one I intend to use, I built as a carry gun so its KISS theory all the way. Heck I didnt even put Ambi's on it becase I dont like Ambi's on a carry gun.

My Charles Daly 1911 arrived with an extended ambi safety. After carrying it for a while, and noting that the ambi safety would sometimes "move" from "safe" to "fire" position without my knowledge, I replaced it with a "stock" GI safety....

I shoot a cheap kydex holster for IDPA shoots but i really won't not want to run with it in real life with out my hand on it. I like a more secure hold for real life work.

A good Kydex holster has a pretty good "click" and holds pretty tight. I keep mine tight enough that it won't fall out of the holster even upside down and it still has a smooth draw.
I've found the Comp-tac kydex holster to be the nicest, but my blade tech works fine as well.

I use comp-tac for all my kydex needs, and that includes competition. For Carry I prefer leather but for competition I believe kydex is faster.

I like my Comp-Tac holsters. I went with the locking paddle design so I can change guns during local matched w/o having to take my belt off. They still stay in place very well.
My girls even like Comp-tac. They send a pack of smarties candy with every shipment.
They are also very big supporters of IDPA.
