Who's running varget in a 243?

Re: Who's running varget in a 243?

I have a Rem 700 1-12 24" barrel in .243. I use and love Varget. Using 85 grain Sierra HPBT in a Winchester case, BR2 primer, 41.1 grains of Varget got me excellent groups.

Before I chrono this load, other projects took over so I do not have chrono data for you. But the groups were excellent!

Using 40gr. of Varget in Lapua neck sized cases, with Nosler 70gr. ballistic tips with CCI LRM primers and chrono was 3453fps average. Rifle is Remington 700 SPS Varmint with factory 26" barrel and I think it is a 9 1/8" twist. It's my gopher getter. I was using 39gr. of IMR 4064 last year with 3464fps avg, but that load hated winter weather. I'm looking to play with the 87gr. vmax this fall after the gophers are done for the year.

Varget is to hot for .243 in my opinion try a slower powder, I like IMR 4350. less pressure better velocity better ES. I shoot a 107 SMK in a 1 8" barrel with 37.5 of IMR 4350 for 300 to 1000 yds

Re: Who's running varget in a 243?

Thanks folks. I loaded some 90gr nbt over 39.5 and 40.0 of varget with cci primers. It didn't group well at all. But, the case might have only been 60% or so full. I didnt have any signs of pressure, so I'll start 2 grain increment loads on up. Thanks for all the help.

That sounds like a scary combo.
How's the muzzle blast?
Hell, even if you miss game with the bullet, the shock wave should give it a heart attack.
I'd be very careful working up loads for your 243 using varget.
Keep the charges on the low end and the bullets light to start.

Re: Who's running varget in a 243?

If you've got a 1-10" twist, you'll probably find several good loads with bullets in the 65-75gr range and maybe even some a little lighter. Buddy of mine has a Cooper Pheonix in 243 with the same twist and it'll shoot anything he loads in it within that range of bullet weights. His is pickier about the bullet than the powder. His really liked the Sierra BK in 70gr. and H380 powder, but most combos yielded very respectable groups.

700 with 26" 1/9.125 twist. My most accurate load is the 87 Vmax pushed by 36.0 grains of Varget, seated 10 thousandths back. Not the fastest, but scary accurate...
