Who's stocking up on ammo?

Seems the price hike is imminent. I've seen three different online sellers note that their prices will rise 5-15% on May 1st. Wanna pick up some bulk handgun ammo and some rifle rounds. Are there any 'Hide Vendors that sell bulk ammunition? I'd rather give them my business.

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

I'm gonna check out USA. The match stuff I'll load myself but I don't want to load 500 308s and 1,200 .223s, 1,000 9mms, etc just to practice with.

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

Get a fully progressive press like a dillon 650 and you will be amazed at how fast you can load that much ammo. You could probably load 500 rounds in less time that it'd take you to drive to the store and buy it, unless you live 3 blocks from the ammo store. I load my match ammo one at a time, but all pistol and general use .223 and .308 gets cranked out on the 650. They aren't cheap, but it will eventually pay for itself if you shoot a lot.

Good luck,
Erik

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

The base metal prices are going up, so reloading isn't going to be any better deal than it is now (in fact, maybe the opposite).

I stocked up when prices were half what they are now. I have a lifetime supply of .22, 9mm, .40, and match .308. I have a bit of .223, but not a lifetime supply.... yet.

Well, yeah but I'm pretty sure they make the factory ammo out of the same components, so your "base metals" argument doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm not saying that reloading is getting cheaper by the day, just that it's cheaper than buying factory ammo if you shoot enough. Being able to taller the load to the firearm is a plus also...

That's exactly my point, so yes, it does make sense.

1. Metal prices rise
2. This makes component prices rise.
3. This makes ammo prices rise.

So... If you think an increase in ammo prices makes reloading any more profitable than it used to be... refer to number 2.

Reloading may make sense for you, but this increase in ammo cost doesn't doesn't play into that equation. In fact, your savings per round will stay the same as a dollar amount, but DECREASE as a percentage.

Now if you re-read my post which you quoted, you will see that it is spot on.

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

If YOU re-read the 2nd half of MY post(the part you didn't quote) you'll see that I am making no claims of relational percentages of any sort. Only that loading your own ammo is cheaper than buying factory ammo if you shoot a lot. And that you can do it very quickly if you have the right equipment. You can also make better ammo for your weapons than you can buy from the factory.

You disagree? You don't want to load tour own ammo? Fine, I really couldn't care less - just making a suggestion to the OP.

Now piss off.

So to the OP,

I'm stocking up. Not for me, but so you guys can

Erud, let me get this straight...

1. I respond to Kalmam's post (<span style="font-weight: bold">not yours</span>)...
2. You jump in and say that my "argument doesn't make sense".
3. I correct you, showing you how it <span style="font-weight: bold">does</span> make sense.
4. You tell me to, "piss off".

Very mature answer. Clearly both reason and the moral high ground are on your side. If you are that thin skinned, perhaps you should be more careful what you jump into.

Remember the rule here to talk like you would to someone's face. (This is not a suggestion).

And just out of curiosity, how exactly does, "...so your "base metals" argument doesn't make a lot of sense" constitute, "just making a suggestion to the OP"?

Steve, I ordered some handgun rounds from USA Ammo today but still need a good deal of rifle rounds. 5.56 and .308 specifically. I've been meaning to order a big wedgie (haha never thought I'd say that) anyways so I'll throw some ammo in there, too. Your prices are very competitive.

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

Everything will go up except the value of the dollar so if you can afford it go out and get the reloading press and all your components or start buying what you need.
I hate to sound pessimistic but like it or lump it, everything will be going up and up, I'm just being realistic.
I've been stocking up for years and am glad that I bought alot while it was cheaper but I still wished I had bought more about 6-10 years ago. It was pretty cheap then.

I already reload. That was in my OP. However, all other monetary things being equal, the time it would take to load 500+ rounds for 4 different calibers that I'm just going to blow off during practice sessions isn't worth it. Could I upgrade to a turret press? Sure, but $300 buys you a LOT of ammunition. I started reloading to tailor match loads to my rifles, not to load bulk practice ammunition. I just don't have the time.

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

It seems everyone is stocking up. I can not find Black Hills or FGMM 175 anywhere. So I will switching to Southwest Ammo and then probably start reloading sometime later this year.

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

I've been stocking up on ammo and components. Sometimes if you watch the sales flyers you can get some decent deals at places like Dunhams or Cabelas. The last time I was able to get XM193 5.56 at Dunhams for around $.28 per round with all the coupons. Components have always been high but Cabelas has CCI small rifle primers for $19.95 for 1K the other week.

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

I have 6000 LCLR .308 brass and 4000 LC .223 brass along with some 1000+ Grendel and other assorted brass ready to go. I bought up a ton of bullets and powder a while back so I'm good there too.

Now I just clear the shelves when I see cheap .45/.357/.40/.44. I bought 750 rounds of .45 just yesterday walking though Walmart, usually they have no .45 so I try to take it all when I see .45 cheap. The local gun shops still try to sell their .45 for $25+/box so $16 at Walmart is a no brainier.

I'm a little worried about that anti-lead bill so I'll prob. order a few thousand more .308 bullets and 6.5 for reloading, just to be on the safe side. The price might stay the same or go up but it certainly wont be going down.

I do the same thing, and am much happier with the performance of my reload's.

If I had a life time supply of ammo at my house, I'd be at the range 7 days a week. I don't think I could fit a life time's supply of ammo in my house if I tried :p

I agree

The "lifetime supply" was based off of my current usage plus a little. I don't touch that supply. When I shoot, I buy ammo to shoot, so hopefully I'll die with a "lifetime supply" for my kid.

The real advantage is, when bullet serial # laws and bullet microchip laws are discussed, and ammo prices are discussed, I can just laugh, knowing those problems can't touch me if I don't want them to.

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

Midway has actually already raised their prices on some components. I reguarly shoot Nosler CC. I try to buy at least 1000 of one bullet type every 4-6 weeks and have been doing so for about 5 months now. About 4-6 weeks ago their prices were:

.223 69gr per 1000 = $138
.308 168gr per 1000 = $209
.308 175gr per 250 = $65

Now

.223 69gr per 1000 = $172
.308 168gr per 1000 = $231 (it was $249 last week)
.308 175gr per 250 = $79

I have nothing against Midway and this is not meant to be negative towards them. I just had this data and wanted to use it to illustrate how much of a price increase we should expect to see. I've spent a lot of money shopping with Uncle Larry and will continue to do so, but I also shop around for the best price a lot more than I used to.

I've spent all of my 2010 tax return and then some stocking up on bullets and brass. Powder and primer availablity and price have stabalized from a few years ago, so I'm not too worried about them. Reloading is not the huge economic savings it was previously, but it still is a savings and has other added benefits previously mentioned.

One new product line I just saw advertised recently is Hornady's new Steel Match line of ammo. Clearly aimed at the USPSA/IPSC/3gun shooter. Not sure of price point yet, but possibly something to consider.

That is why you should shop around. Very seldom will Potterfield have the best price. What he has going is inventory and quick ship not good prices or cheap ship.

Try Powder Valley -
I just bought 1000 Nosler 168gr CC for $193 and 1000 Nosler 77gr CC for $142.
Their Nosler 175gr CC are $61 for 250ct.

Also they will combine their powder and primer shipment so you don't get tagged with the two hazmat fee..

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

Black Hills has sent me a list of products that will go up tomorrow. It not as bad as I thought, not everything went up. I bet the ones that dont go up right now, go up for 2012.

Yep, PV are good folks to deal with. Right now they do have the best price on Nosler CC's. I placed an order with them last week.

Wideners, Graf & Sons, and Bartlett Reloading are also good places to shop for components. There are deals out there to be had you just have to shop around.

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

On Tues. I ordered 3000 Hornady 55 Gr. SP's for my .223. With the Midway disount code they were cheaper than Powder valley by $30.00. Yes, it does pay to shop around and use those codes.

If you don't mind once shot brass, round2brass has prices that are hard to beat. Disregard the out of stock on the web site - call and they'll let you know what they have. Just picked up 1500 rounds of Lake City brass for $96.00 shipped.

Re: Who's stocking up on ammo?

I am always stocked up on ammo and components . If I don't have 2-3 years worth of ammo or components to load ammo on hand for all my weapons I start getting a little fidgety
