Both my Remingtons have the early two piece sear, I always wondered why, so I found the answer, just pasted it.
It's been some time now, but as I recall, the two piece sear was made to avoid a patent infringement of some sort and when that was resolved (or the patent expired) the single sear was introduced.
I think that it is Stuart Otteson's book, "The Bolt Action", the reason is as you stated. Supposedly, the first batch of rifles were ready to ship when the lawyers warned that the one piece sear my infringe on the Win. 52 patent. All of the rifles had their triggers replaced with the split-sear models before being shipped. The safety only blocks one of the pieces, if I recall correctly.
