Why not a 221 Fireball in AR?

Wrong. You can load mag-length 75gr (and 77gr) projectiles for the .223/5.56. Get a barrel with at least a 1:8 twist or faster and bang away.

This is true, except for the 75gr Amax...the bullet design won't allow very much,if any, neck tension when seated to mag length in a 223/5.56mm AR15.

Yep, the ogive side of the baring surface of the bullet is below the end of the neck at 2.230".

The Hornady 75gr HPBT is designed for mag feeding out of a AR.

221FB is a novel idea out of a AR but the loss of velocity at mag length with heavy bullets won't be worth the trade off.

Whooops. That's my bad in offering up advice without reading more carefully...I overlooked the AMAX portion of the post. Sorry about any confusion. Yep...the 75gr AMAX is likely to cause you problems with proper functioning from an AR-15 when seated at mag length (unless single-fed of course).

I run the 77gr SMKs personally and have had outstanding accuracy with them from all of my ARs, including at extended ranges.
