Are they still relevant? Hard to believe they've been around so long and still cost as much as they do without a viable alternative.

I've been doing more long range night shooting and like the idea of an all in one rifle mounted solution vs screwing around with a million different handhelds. Is there any world in which the ~$7500 price tag of a Raptar-S (ES) is remotely justified? Any other options around the corner to consider?

Apologies for the excessive snark, but it was a serious question. Seems like a good product, but the price point and lack of other apparent alternatives in 2020 is a bit puzzling.

The other capabilities of the device aside, anything with a military grade laser rangefinder is extremely expensive for civilians. See also the PLRF-15 and PLRF-25. Scroll down to the ranging section of this post and the issue is well described. https://precisionrifleblog.com/2018/08/26/extreme-long-range-tips-spotting-shots-ranging/

Thank you! I didn't realize the rangefinder quality was that high up there, I just saw the 1500m range and figured it was about average.

Am I correct in understanding that there is no difference in the actual rangerfinder between the full power and ES versions, only the aiming lasers/illum? Sounds like they are both 1550nm?

The mounting system sucks. You can't bump it around for an extended period of time and not loose zero. If it had a real mount instead of a screw it might be worth it.
